I just read another news article about why mastodon didn’t make it and is dying. It’s very sad to hear and probably explains why I have to keep adding more server capacity to handle all the people quitting mastodon.

@jerry “Well, we can’t sell on it, we can’t really pull metrics, and there’s no mega-corp we can go to for sound bytes and/or playing the blame game. Yep, it’s dying and continuing to do so.”

@jerry@infosec.exchange my friend, mastodon is a failure. A failure i tell you. This has been decided by the internet sages ( journalists with big ego) 😆
Anyway good job on adding capacity.

@jerry I laughed so hard throughout this thread that my sides hurt now. LOLz!

@jerry July 4 is the end of Infosec Exchange. The owner is going to shut it down for something called "Planned Maintenance". This is obviously a ploy to hide the self DDOS'ing and to make us touch grass while limiting our usage!

@jerry I like quitting so much that I keep coming back, just so I can do it again.

I've noticed the #MainstreamMedia is very oppositional to #Mastodon, generally speaking, and, despite the covfefe, is actually very supportive of #Twitter. I think what's actually going on is a microcosm of a known issue with American news media, that, because drama gets them views, they tend to hype drama while quietly supporting the people who make it.

It's really bad for #democracy.

It also means that the #Fediverse, as a movement, has a bit of an uphill battle against them. We just need to keep chugging along and trying to find ways to get people to make accounts here and start posting, even if it's just copies of their Twitter posts. Having accurate news coverage would be helpful, but we don't necessarily need it to get people doing things. Back in the #Occupy movement, we accomplished quite a lot, despite the hostile news industry purposefully misinforming people. I suspect this will be the same.

It can be frustrating, but News isn't reality: keep on posting.

@jerry there are so many articles like this. Which is weird. It's almost like someone is flooding the newspace with disinfo in order to promote something

@jerry Is there ever a rationale for why people think it's dying? Or is it as simple as "Twitter still exists, therefore Mastodon lost"?

@jerry Yeh....place is fucking deserted.....it's like they rate limited the whole dumpster fire.

Journalism really has gone to shit in the last 15 years.

@jerry sir, I fear you may have applied sarcasm to your post. We don’t allow that here. Please edit your post to remove any traces of smug humor.

@jerry new level of sarcasm as been broken.

@jerry Of course. Empty servers cost the most! I'm paying 95% of my paycheck every month to pay for the server space I'm not using. Maybe if I started a Mastodon server, I could pay less!

LOL

@jerry People are still gathering for the wake. @evan

@jerry It surprises me how some people still post tweets even if these tweets will not reach outside the platform at the moment. I like mastodon. It is my only social media where I can interact without feeling overwhelmed and even though I get annoyed with posts of American-centric politics it does not worsen my experience. I guess dismissing the ones left behind is easy but I can imagine that it is hard to let go of what you have built or of what is familiar.

Rosie

@jerry the same can be said for the newsoutlets. People are still people and they can make wrong judgements of the situation (“the failings of mastodon”) or are still watching. Who are we in the end to judge others?

Rosie

@jerry besides, I think we should not outsource the value of the platform to external validation. The bustling activity speaks for itself

Rosie

@jerry oh wait the deafening silence speaks for itself ;)

@jerry it’s because you don’t have rate limiting on the batch RPC requests coming from the front-end, the tertiary inertial manifolds can’t handle the resulting 4° phase shift polarity modulation from the inverted supermatrix caused by rapidly fluctuating quantum magnetic fields.

Scotty can have it fixed in 5 minutes if you push him, even if he says he needs 30.

/s: I've heard that there is a new #NDA b/w #Mastodon gGmbH and #LindenLab.

In order to bury your inactive account on #Mastodon, you now need to rent a grave on #2ndLife / #SL.
The only coffins available sobfar are Egyptian sarcophagi in high resolution.
This is why you are having to add capacity. /s

@jerry as a tumblr resident, welcome to the dead social media club where you can post all you like and news sources won't link you in their articles without your consent but they'll absolutely talk about you like you're not in the room

@jerry it's definitely not 'dying' but it's not close at all to being close in number of users & usage to be considered an 'actual' social network which wouldn't be that important if this wasn't a social network. Less people on it means less people are interested to join etc.

@jerry gotta love the objectiveness and facts-based reporting of news outlets

@jerry it really is tragic, all these people quitting and taking up our resources 😢 😉
