Twitter, once the most powerful real-time information system ever built, so much so someone accidentally live tweeted the death of bin Laden, now not only can’t be used to save lives from bad weather, but won’t even let the existence of bad weather be seen by the weather people.

@davidaugust too bad they can’t launch a Mastodon migration…

My Actual Brain

@ematts @davidaugust this exactly! They need a mastodon instance. The people who work there can toot from their official mastodon work accounts. Are they verified? Well they are rooting from the official domain so yeah… they are probably official.

Ijio Nano

@davidaugust More reason to decentralize this kind of stuff!

Justin FItzsimmons

@davidaugust well you see, nobody could figure out how to make it profitable, especially the current owner, so it doesn't deserve to exist

Riyadh Elalami🏴

@smn @davidaugust why does it need to be profitable?
It could have sustained itself if it went to a non-profit model. Similar to how Wikipedia is surviving and flourishing.

Ariaflame

@Riyadh144 @smn @davidaugust Pretty sure there was an invisible /s at the end of Justin's post.

corb

@davidaugust Twitter is a private company with zero guarantee that any message will arrive in a timely manner or arrive at all. It should NEVER be used to disseminate important information.

minimoog

@corb @davidaugust The fact is though that it has been possible to reliably use it for exactly that for years, until Space Karen came along. What do we go back to - megaphones and sirens?

jenny from the bloc

@definitelynotacorporatespy @davidaugust holy hell. i was in middle school when it happened so this is very much news to me. that is *wild*

LexiGirl

@davidaugust yet still they remain on Twitter. Why?

Paul

@LexiGirl @davidaugust There's a lot of interesting people out there.

ultrawelfare

@davidaugust
It's really sad but... the fact that we are relying on just 1 website for anything that is beyond crucial is concerning...

Alpha Kilo Papa

@davidaugust You actually think this makes sense? How much browsing does this official account do everyday? Shouldn't it be solely used for providing info?

That Frisian Girl-ish

@davidaugust@mastodon.online something something essential infrastructure in private hands.

Lawrence London

@davidaugust
,,,,and all those state and federal agencies that depend on Twitter to get their news and information out to those who need it will not be able to reach a large percentage of them because they will not have or want a twitter account, now required to read anything at Twitter and with a post read daily limit. The US Social Security Administration is one of those agencies. I am on their mailing list and am notified of news updates several times a week. Now I will not be able to read them.

Saurav Shrestha

@avantgeared @davidaugust the feds should just start their own mastodon instance and have their various agencies accounts on it.

ASdasdas

@davidaugust Buy Twitter Blue™©® (it's less than cup of coffee 😂) or die!

bwtony

@Kofiy @davidaugust it’s more than a coffee it’s 1.5 coffees from at least my order.

ASdasdas

@bwtony @davidaugust Yeah, I was making fun of elon.
(In my country it's more like 2-3 GOOD coffees)

Peter Flynn ✅

@davidaugust But corporates and #media people are largely unaware of all this, and still crave the volume of their #birdsite #followers, even though there is no measure of actual eyeballs. There is little point in offering them Mastodon when the surrounding #ecosystem is still so poorly developed and the volumes so low. Which is a great pity.

DrAlexandraK

@davidaugust

when someone is SO entitled as Musk, not much has any value.

What an absolute asshole he's revealed himself to be.

Out of personal dignity and self respect people should leave that site completely,
it's not twitter

Chris Young

@davidaugust The National Weather Service relies on Twitter to find out what the weather is? Shouldn't they have an army of meteorologists working that out for them?

OccuWorld

@confusedbunny @davidaugust cost cutting (more work with less people) and price gouging... it's the capitalist profit path.

Crochetcat

@confusedbunny @davidaugust I know someone who works at NWS, and they do have a good crew, but the more ears and eyes out there the better. Especially in less populated areas.

národní prase
@davidaugust i love this. Everyone finally realizes twitter is not fit for this purpose (or rather any purpose) and new, better systems will be put in its place
Carole Luck

@davidaugust can't see how this is going to appeal to advertisers. Over a weekend is not the best time to expect the views of marketers but from Monday morning ... who knows?

macarty

@davidaugust that would fit beautifully in Reddit's r/LeopardsAteMyFace

Don Cooley

@davidaugust
It is a shame that the narcissist m-fer has mucked up a flawed but highly useful tool as it has, but we DID get by before the bird site. Instead of whining about tw debacle just establish federated information/emergency warning system for all gov't agencies worldwide. No individual accounts. Just the facts ma'am, just the facts. Read-only access to all. RSS enabled. Include SMS alert subscriptions.

BitcoDavid #FuckTrump

@davidaugust

So waitaminute. Wait. Nat. Weather Service can't post data on Twitter, so they tweet that to their followers on Twitter? Just sayin'...

That's like the Microsoft classic, "Unable to locate keyboard. Strike any key to continue."

Justathought

@davidaugust If Mastodon can master live at a similar level to what the birdsite could do- would be a game changer. Main bit I miss. (if there's hints for settings/tricks that would optimize 'live' type posts for events - point me in the right direction please) 'breaking'

Saurav Shrestha

@davidaugust the concept of a public digital square should be treated as a utility. A public utility. Like Mastodon :)

The minute a boneheaded guy like Elon puts his mitts on it, it’s over. He has too much power over it now that he owns it.

Remember before he bought Twitter the free online community kicked his ass regularly. Notice how that is pretty impossible now with the blue checks and the rate limiting and now the users needing to be logged in to read tweets.

It’s become his dungeon.

AlienKnight

@davidaugust This is actually kinda insane. I hadn't thought about the impact for Weather reports and other similar things

Fabian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@davidaugust I wonder if this also opened up a new DoS vector? Just send 600 tweets where you mention a specific user. Would their client then immediately try to load these and use up their daily budget?

Or is there also a limit on how many tweets one can send? But then, someone would just need 10 accounts and send sixty tweets each?
