@normis @timoka @EU_Commission then why is this illustration showing an audio cable? Also why is it showing what looks like a cable Apple stoped using on all its devices before USB-C existed? And why is it showing USB-A which was never the output side and is still in use today? ๐Ÿค” Iโ€™m confused by this illustration.

@timoka @EU_Commission

It doesn't need to be exclusively USB C, if that is the question. This is not a ban on headphone jacks. As for the technical capabilities of the USB C port, the Directive focuses only on charging.

@timoka I wonder how well my guitar will work mono jack to usb-c. Shit, I imagine.

@tom @timoka I was about to comment on the same thing, as the 3.5mm jack has been standard across all devices for decades, already reducing "e-waste".

Reading through the article and FAQ, I realized that the OpenGraph image attached to this press release appears to be misleading.

The proposal is only for charging of devices, and doesn't affect the presence of audio jacks or any other I/O ports.

FWIW @EU_Commission should update the artwork to remove the 3.5mm plug.

@timoka no, itโ€™s not mandatory. The only requirement is that devices can be charged via USB-C. Thereโ€™s no rule against having an additional 3.5 mm headphone port. On the other hand, there is no requirement for the USB-C socket to output audio either.
