@vantablack Sorry, I disagree. Any #Fediverse instance should follow the rules or risk being defederated, but beyond that:

We’ve been railing against “walled gardens”, let’s not build one.

People may be more willing to try the Fediverse if they can keep in touch with their “Monoverse” friends.

Meta can harvest data now if it feels like it. Create a user account on each of the big instances, and suck up everything in that instance’s Federated feed. Do it right and nobody will know.

I got rid of my Facebook account years ago and never got an Instagram account. But I do see this as an opportunity.

@BrianJohnson @vantablack You do realise if the facebook instance becomes the biggest they will essentially have a monopoly on the fediverse and with enough time they'll be able to do basically whatever they want? Including creating a walled garden themselves.

@deivpaukst @vantablack Yes, that is what they did to MySpace. But they already have the big audience, they have no risk of losing that if they don’t federate.

We don’t really know what they will do until they do it. It is possible they will only federate with instances they control. (So why federate at all? Put a Meta controlled instance in each EU country and claim they are meeting the EU data privacy laws.)

I agree the threat is there, I just don’t think walking them off will do anything to help.

@deivpaukst Hey, can you tell me more about what this means? I thought that because of the nature of the fediverse no one instance could take over any other instance???

@BrianJohnson @vantablack agree, this doesn't weaken privacy imo as anyone can already scrape public data. It's taking choice away from people. Also I feel people are getting far too worked up over hypotheticals with Meta taking over ActivityPub. I just don't see that happening since it's open-source, and Meta has actually had a pretty good track record with open-source.

@vantablack This might be of interest to you @lio @nilsding if you haven't already seen it.

@vantablack Nothing makes me trust something more than a million exclamation marks.

@vantablack
Don't mind the Zuckerbros ganging up on you, sounds like they're starting to panic. Your efforts are appreciated!

I"ll update the kbin post with the clean new domain name, though I see the old link still works too

@vantablack@beach.city @blahaj what do you think? Personally I'd let them federate but keep watch the situation and block them if it gets out of hand

cassowarycasper

@vantablack Feels like there are a lot of corporate shills in this thread. You are absolutely correct about this, don't let anyone bully you into doubting it.

MOULE (Kaizopocalypse Out Now)

@vantablack Signed it! #P92 / #Barcelona / whatever it will be called will overwhelm the #Fediverse with its traffic from potentially a billion #Instagram users, which will be a big challenge for small fedi instances like my own. Not to mention the unsolicited data mining. I’ll definitely be fediblocking them!

@vantablack As the admin of several single-user instances, I would be very happy to be able to follow old friends on Instagram. But that's a decision that would affect just myself.

@vantablack And how exactly this preemptive blocking is supposed to help? In my opinion it is likely to have the opposite effect.

Suppose Meta launches something which won't be a failure right from the start. Some people come (and with marketing effort there could be quite a lot including some interesting personalities) and they will be isolated from substantial chunk of Fedi. It won't be good for either and the "free part" will likely be marginalized like it happened with the darknet.

I'd rather let Meta do the blocking, I am sure there won't be any shortage of that.
