After watching Suzume, a film I particularly loved, Devine and I started watching Makoto Shinkai's other films, like Your Name, and Weathering With You. And holy crap... we should have not watched these in a row because it shows just how similar, and formulaic they all are. All 3 films are about saving someone from an impossible situation(from some natural disaster wrapped up with some fantasy elements), with lots and lots of crocodile tears, and with waaay too much Radwimps playing throughout.

Suzume is still pretty fun to watch, and so is the first half of Your Name (can't recommend the 2nd half, or Weathering With You in its entirety), but if the plan is to watch the first two I mentioned, maaaaybe space them out a bit ;).

@JulMorgane The second part isn't all that bad, I just found that the 'altering past events' bit too easy, with lots of disappointing gaps in the story. I couldn't stop thinking that Taki could have kept Mizuha alive by way of the traditions he learned through her (kumihimo). That happy ending didn't feel deserved, feels like cheating, and because it does it has no weight to it. (O'couse, this is just what I think, i certainly do not expect everyone to agree ^^).

@rek That's definitely the biggest thing that's kept me from diving into his works. I saw Your Name and I liked it, but it's hard for me to even know what to watch next when they all kind of look the same. Lots of sunsets and lens flares. It's all really pretty the first time you see it, but I don't think even a serious fan could look at a screenshot and tell you which movie it's from.

Which is a shame because I love animation and when people hype them up as some of the best animated movies ever, I feel like I might be missing out on something, but I just can't get into it.

@montag The aesthetic isn't too bothersome for me, but I get how it can be (i have that same feeling about Wes Anderson films). I may have enjoyed them all a bit more individually if I had put a few months inbetween each. Watching them close together really did taint my enjoyment (esp for Your Name, which i watched last).
That cat in Suzume though, worth a watch just for that haha...~

@rek The one I like most, have not yet seen Suzume, it's Garden of Words, the visuals are gorgeous in all of them but I think this one is the right size for the story it tells. But as always this is a matter of personal taste.

@ghostdancer Ill let some time pass before attempting to watch it :).

@rek shinkaiโ€™s garden of words, ca 50min, sidesteps the formula and is quite good (if a bit odd in one particular facet), can recommend tho :)

@rek Agreed, I avoid his works for being predictable tearjerkers, however masterfully executed.

@bouncepaw maybe not when played so many times in any one film. At one point I was just done hearing it XD...

@chadkoh That's what I found out hehe :). I saw 5 Centimeters per Second ages ago, too, and I remember loving that... wonder if it differs a little theme-wise (it's been too long, cant remember details).
