@johnnysilverhand @Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray are you also going to take away the kitchen knives, baseball bats, cars, and sticks? Those are just as deadly in the hands of someone who is set on doing harm. @justanotherjo @johnnysilverhand @Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray @justanotherjo @johnnysilverhand @Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray Can any of those kill someone from 10m away? Can any of those kill multiple people without the attacker taking a step? Efficiency is the difference. You're advocating for keeping the most efficient means of killing people in as many hands as possible. @zecuse @johnnysilverhand @Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray no, I am advocating for treating the illness that is leading to people being killed. How many bills have been introduced to provide adequate mental health care for anyone who needs it? If all we do is treat the symptoms, the disease will still exist. These guns existed 10 years ago, why were there very few mass shootings then? What changed? It wasn't because guns became easier to acquire. If anything, it has gotten harder. @justanotherjo @johnnysilverhand @Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray 10 years ago, there were still more guns than people. Although this only goes to 2020, this shows the skyrocketting amount of guns available and demonstrates the rise in shootings. More guns = more possibility of shootings = more actual shootings regardless of mental health. You don't let the attacker keep their stick while you try and fix them. @justanotherjo @johnnysilverhand @Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray Sources for the above if you don't want to look at the alt text: @justanotherjo @johnnysilverhand @Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray Your best argument for gun ownership is with Switzerland. However, they have both mandatory military service (for able bodied men) AND extremely high gun control. We also know that taking guns out of circulation will reduce the amount of people that will die by guns. Again, *efficiency* of killing is the key. Source: https://connect.springerpub.com/content/sgrvv/31/2/187 @zecuse @justanotherjo @johnnysilverhand @Alchemist_Final @augieray @zecuse thank you for providing high quality information. That's what should drive these decisions! @Jo. Your account is brand new. I'm not gonna mute you yet. I'm very dubious about the "mental health" argument that is always trotted out. Unless you provide high quality information to back up this "mental health" argument I'm gonna assume you're talking out the side of your neck and villifying yet another maligned minority. Why is the mental health idea so hard to grasp? The first thing people go to when this sort of thing happens is gun control, but why did they shoot people? Something caused them to snap. Maybe they were bullied, maybe they have anger management issues, maybe it's abuse. Sure, you can tighten the gun laws, but that won't fix the reason they snapped and killed people in the first place. when it take 2 years to get an appointment, how can we help the ones who are seeking it? You're not engaging in good faith. I ask you to seriously, and honestly consider if your position is based on verifiable facts (like @zecuse took time to share) *or* bias and "othering" AKA bigotry. If you find you need to do better, then turn off the Newsmax and become informed! Maybe we in the US *really* need *free* bigotry cessation counseling?!? The common denominator in all of the following attacks since 2000 is hard right: othering, bigotry, racism, homophobia, etc. Temple B'nai Israel Oklahoma City Attack, Death of Sean Kennedy, Knoxville Unitarian Universalist church shooting, Jacob Robida shootings and manhunt, 2009 shooting of Pittsburgh police officers, Murders of Raul and Brisenia Flores, Assassination of George Tiller, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting, Wichita Falls shooting, 2010 West Memphis police shootings, 2011 Tucson Shooting, Murder of James Craig Anderson, Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting, 2013 Los Angeles International Airport shooting, Overland Park Jewish Community Center shooting, 2014 Isla Vista killings, 2014 Las Vegas shootings, 2014 Pennsylvania State Police barracks attack, Charleston church shooting, 2015 Lafayette shooting, Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting, 2016 Minneapolis Shooting, Comet Ping Pong shooting, 2017 Olathe, Kansas shooting, Murder of Timothy Caughman, @justanotherjo @Gumption_Trap every major developed country has mental health issues. It is the access when people (white males mainly) snap that is the issue. Remove the access to deadly weapons If you canβt understand that then you are a #nra hack |
@Gumption_Trap @Alchemist_Final @augieray Thank you! What we need is free mental health care, not stricter gun laws. Without a person to pull the trigger, a gun is nothing more than a paper weight. Take away the guns and they will just use something else to kill with. Treat the cause, not the symptom.
