I think .zip top level domain would be ideal to host DNS zones based on their zip/postal codes, much like .tel was meant to be a phonebook TLD.

That would have allowed people to register domains with more-or-less precise locality in mind, like

<my_project>.<zip_code>.zip

For example,

straight_outta.90220.zip for your local gang's rap album, or viva.89107.zip for your hotel, you get the idea.

By the way, @aral this would have dovetailed nicely into your idea of personal domain names.

@drq@mastodon.ml the idea is interesting but people generally only remember their zip code. I only remember my own and the one of the main postal office in Ufa because it consists of almost all zeros. so it'll be quite hard to tell what area the zip code and the domain belong to unless you live in this very area

@a1ba They are globally recognized and are one-per-area.

@drq @aral zip codes are not globally unique, only country-level unique. One example is Florence, Kentucky, US and Fiorano Modenese, Italy sharing a postal code 41042

/dev/urandom

@drq @oreolek @aral fun fact: the number 495 is often associated with both moscow (one of the telephone codes) and washington d.c. (the number of the highway that circles around the city)

@drq @aral I fail to see any purpose though. This won't help with any kind of routing or discovery unless some new and strange ways are developed specifically for it. Also people tend not to recognize zip codes except their own so seeing something like 123544 won't help to estimate the location.

I think something human-readable would be better. district.city.ntld is already there but since it is already too [mis]used maybe we need brand new tld.

Something like: .murino.spb.ru.loc

But it would be hard to control since root tld will have authority. So maybe we should clean up national tlds :)

@shuro The purpose would be to create a publicly-owned (as opposed to privately-owned) service that would allow any person or local organization to create their own domain zone for free. The easiest would be to piggy-back it on the existing globally-connected public service like mail. But then again, an ideal TLD for this is already pretty much squatted.

@drq @aral Maybe we just need a new kind of national TLDs - same as old ones but free and protected from squatting.

It is important for them to be separate roots though because look out of the window.

Maybe we could reuse existing tlds but add extra zone. E.g.

Fili.Moscow.l.ru
Brooklyn.NYC.l.us

@shuro Or... or replace the whole system with something like ALFIS, which... I like the idea, but don't like the butt-headed dictatorial management behind the project.
