Today's the day.
Going to try solar-cooking some bread for the first time ☀️ 🍞

In high school my three-person team turned a hatbox and some tinfoil into a little parabolic dish just strong enough for sunlight to toast a full size marshmallow placed at its focus. The whole class went outside to watch the teacher eat the marshmallow. It was overcast and drizzling. Nevertheless, the marshmallow was lightly toasted. PRAISE THE SUN! 🙌🌞🙌 @rek btw the family on the ketch moored behind me asked me about my solar stove last night while I was cleaning up, they're HELLA enthused about it and I was sad to have to tell them that I haven't gotten to try mine yet - BUT I told them to visit 100r.co and also to hit you two up next time they see you on this dock. so heads up that you might get pinged for an IRL chat about these adventures :) @klardotsh will be happy to have that conversation :>. Hope the bread works out, been out for 15 min now, playing the waiting game. the result: https://merveilles.town/@neauoire/110346250694057921 Success! Now the baguette is cooling down, while I threw the other half of the recipe to cook outside. Once the first baguette is cool we'll give it a taste and let you all know how it was, texture wise. So I made a full recipe and cooked the bread in two batches (didnt want it to expand too much and get stuck in the tube). Took 1 hour per baguette. We had a taste, and the texture is great! We're so pleased~! I don't usually bake in the summer because it takes too much propane, so this is very exciting. There you have it, solar-cooked bread. Solar cooking notes, for those interested: @masakepic Yea im shocked at how well it worked, expected something along the lines of steamed bread. I didnt expect it to have a bit of crunch to it. @rek it looks great! do you have to take care to keep it from hitting the sides/top of the tube or is that ok? this reminds me of a Pyrex “bread tube” that I have, which is just a tube of glass (with a wire frame to keep it from rolling around) which you butter up and bake a perfectly tubular loaf in (in a standard oven). it’s weird and probably from the 70s. @rek OK but how is THE CRUST??? Does it make a nice satisfying sound when breaking the bread? 🔥 @thomasorus crust is pretty good, exceeds my expectations. Not saying you'd find this in a bakery, but there is a crunch to it, esp at the ends cause the tube temp is higher at one end than the other (i had to flip the bread around once during cooking). |

Waiting for pics 😋
