@Yoshi no i saw that post and thought it was funny but thought a really thin red line was terrible for visibility and the image wasn't cropped enough so the thin line was clashing against all the band kid stuff in their recommended

@ipg it's gotten way better with pipewire though
CauseOfBSOD :fediverse:

@ipg@wetdry.world my chromebooks headphone jack when i boot an actual linux distro: (disappear.mp4)

fops (plushie arc) (Chaotic Stupid)

@ipg i've literally had like zero (0) issues with audio on linux ever but i've seen it memed a lot lol
and with pipewire it's SO much better because now instead of loopback hell you just use helvum

@ipg@wetdry.world I've only once had an issue with sound tbh
Most normal PC Hardware works perfectly
Heck, it's better than Windows most of the time since, with Pipewire, you can do stuff like you would with JACK, and that's super useful

The only time I've heard of issues is on weird hardware setups, like Chromebooks or Macs
Honestly? I have no idea why chromebooks don't work
But Macs? I wouldn't blame that on Linux, given that Apple's audio stuff is proprietary and thus most of the stuff we know is reverse engineered - want better sound on Macs? pester Apple to make a Linux driver
Oh wait
That'll never happen because it's apple

The one issue I mentioned earlier was when I tried to do a52 encoding and due to my weird hardware setup for surround sound (HDMI to an Xbox One S, which then had optical to an amp and another HDMI cable to a projector) that didn't work - I still haven't fully worked out why it didn't however

@ipg @12 I have felt this so hard recently as Iโ€™ve been building a media player through NixOS on a ten-ish year old 1l PC. Should probably just grab an ARM based thing.

sen

@12 @ipg I have a heap of 1l/TinyMiniMicro PCs, and Iโ€™m trying to work out how viable they are for kiosks for a client. So I thought Iโ€™d build a Plex box through NixOS as part of testing.

12 Lilith it/its๐’€ญ๐’ˆน๐’ ๐’Šฉ

@sendai @ipg also plex box... we don't know much about plex but do you mean a renderer or a controller or....

sen

@12 @ipg Ah, pardon me. Plex comes as a server that hosts the database and a web app, or you can point a player app at it. The various kiosk systems use a similar architecture, so I was working on building something thatโ€™d allow me to use cheap secondhand hardware for various clients.

Eragon

@ipg This is a lie, I never had any trouble with sound.

@ipg f#*king PulseAudio โ€ฆ
ALSA worked so much better, why would you want a Windows-like daemon to manage your sound card is beyond me.

Melpomene

@ipg@wetdry.world so relatable. Swapping between apps or just like, existing can kill my sound. Seems like human sacrifice works more often than not though.

@ipg

I legit have no idea where this stereotype of linux sound issues comes from...

I have never had sound issues on linux...

@ipg My PC audio experience:

Windows: generally works but once in a while decides to fuck up your setup without you knowing, also you can't decide what plays where, also turns devices on and off and switches your defaults completely at random, also had 70 million control panels each doing something different

Linux: there's a bit of crackling while an app adjusts volume in a shitty way (e.g. youtube player) and,,, that's it

wakame

@ipg

Where things are big that should be small

points at any Electron app

Scribblemacher

@ipg it happens to me all the damn time that audio is just not working, and unplugging and plugging the speakers in again fixed it. Usually when coming out of sleep mode. (Actually a lot of shit randomly breaks when coming out of sleep mode)

Scout Da Woof

@ipg I feel this. Words cannot describe how much I struggle with getting audio working properly every time I install any distro. But at least you can do freaky things like output to the jack and speakers at the same time :3

hexaheximal

@ipg nah, it should be the pulseaudio logo, not tux

Tetra

@ipg@wetdry.world Gentoo is the only DIY distro that I've used where the audio always works, and idk why

japjao

I spent 4 hours wondering why audio wasnt working only to realize i had alsa muted
