@rjcc @Mastodon The default is mastodon.social. Many of us are trying to convince them to rotate the default server among a few of the biggest, well-moderated servers.

@jcrabapple @rjcc @Mastodon I'm wondering if a sign-up could include a way to randomly assign people to instances. Use a short questionnaire with key words to help identify interests. Then using that info, randomly assign people to instances that use those key words.

Go beyond asking them to change, get some of the new app developers to create alternative on boarding for new users, then start recommending those best apps to friends and potential new users. Maybe even some major Admins endorse that app because of this feature and the fact that they were responsive to this request. Servers with a recommended app.

@Urban_Hermit @AskPippa @rjcc @Mastodon One of the iOS apps is already directing users to its own instance.

What I think would be better is a short "help me find my server" quiz, like the things you see on websites that help people choose the right product model for them, based on a few multiple choice questions. Then it could suggest one or two servers from the pool that is already available on joinmastodon.org/servers

@EverydayMoggie @AskPippa @rjcc @Mastodon Yep I have discussed that with some folks too. Also a great idea.

@jcrabapple @rjcc @Mastodon Who exactly comes up with this list? A centralized group of people...

@mrhamel @rjcc @Mastodon Haven't really considered how to get the list, honestly. Probably something along the same lines as the requirements to get on joinmastodon.org.

That is a great idea, and would be a great way to get past whatever barrier to entry the decentralization is, without just undermining decentralization.

@dragonfrog @rjcc @Mastodon right! The criteria could be similar to getting on JoinMastodon. A privacy policy, rules, moderation, be up and running for a certain amount of time, etc. Could even gather 20 instances and put it to a vote to pick 10 that go into the rotation.

@jcrabapple @dragonfrog @rjcc @Mastodon one suggestion i really liked from the GitHub issue about this is to have the user pick an instance as part of the username, and while it may not be the best way to educate users about instances, i think most users who don't know about how fedi works wouldn't care about much more...
