We do this to encourage decentralization, though it's easily to set your own limit or remove it.

@pixelfed according to the latest scientific research the optimal number of users for an instance should be 1416. Please fix.

Fixed what? Just because a value is not correct in your eyes does not mean that you have to fix it. This value does not contribute to the proper functioning of Pixelfed. This value only represents a philosophy. Everyone is free to use it or not.
