Question: for those of you who have more than one #fediverse account -- like accounts on several #mastodon servers, or also accounts on #funkwhale, #mobilizon, #boowyrm, #pleroma, #pixelfed, #peertube #owncast etc -...
Would you prefer to show to the world they are all yours (e.g. by connecting them with rel=me links) or keep them entirely separate so nobody can tell it's you on Mastodon who listens to that music on Funkwhale, say or reads those books?

@J12t I like keeping them separate as I can link between them should I want to (and in context)

Johannes Ernst

@dajb So do you want to link, or not? Certainly the option should exist, I'm trying to figure out what people actually do.

Doug Belshaw

@J12t I guess I'm saying that I do, in fact, do this. But I'd like the option of doing it selectively on my own terms (as in, I wouldn't want something to automatically show all of my accounts, which is what I thought you were getting at!)

Johannes Ernst

@dajb Yep, automatically without consent by the user would be a bad idea, I agree.

@J12t

On mastodon you are not able to create different chanel like we can do in Hubbzilla or Friendica then we can create different account according to the topic. One account to shop photo one account in french one account politics one account for jokes etc...

Johannes Ernst

@tofeo Yes, multiple personas for different purposes -- like politics vs jokes -- is a good idea. But then would you want to link your jokes "text" account to a jokes "audio" and a jokes "videos" or "bookmark" account on a different app, or keep them separate?

@J12t no it is better to keep separate account separate.

@J12t

Personally I would.

Please note that if a user has an established rel=me to another ActivityPub and announces it Public then it should become an `alsoKnownAs` which is w3.org/wiki/Activity_Streams_e to be suited for anything JSON/Actor-related.

@J12t I have two Mastodon accounts and two channels on my PeerTube, and another Pixelfed as well. I keep them connected as in everybody knows they're all me, but I don't link them because one of my Mastodon accounts is more work related. A lot of people reading my social stuff don't really want to see the work stuff.

@J12t Well there are two different use cases here.

People wanting to have different hats is one thing. It absolutely makes sense to have a professional versus a fun persona. Obviously that person doesn’t want to link the two.

But the issue of having different accounts on different platforms because they do different things, that is a huge drawback to the #Fediverse system as it is now. That’s the case of the same hat, the same persona, on different platforms simply because different platforms can’t do the same work.

I really hope the system that some point figures out how to have the same account/persona on different interfaces. I think I remember that Bluesky might support that out of the box.

@volkris @J12t I absolutely agree. I officially have *two* Fediverse hats (I link both of them in both profiles and use the same avatar) that I want to keep separate, but I can use only *one* platform (instance software), because I can't connect multiple accounts into one hat. So the #Fediverse is all #Mastodon for me, and I can't use anything else, because I don't want more hats.

Bigou

@J12t Depend of account. Some I want people to know it's me, others I don't.

@J12t
I believe we need to think very carefully about why it is usually considered necessary to maintain instance-specific, local identities. Is this a real requirement, in all cases, or sometimes simply path-dependent design?

Johannes Ernst

@bobwyman imho it’s because app developers have been thinking 1) I’m building this great app, 2) let’s make it talk to others, and not building “fediverse native” apps. But then, the necessary federated identity infrastructure doesn’t seem to exist yet in the fediverse. So on your question: path-dependent, with the caveat that not apps will likely travel that entire path.

@J12t for me personally, it would be great to be able to link them. Each serves its own purpose, yes, and I retoot on my main (mastodon) account from them as a central "feed" type thing.

Giving the person the option to see where else I am, but actually just decide they don't care about my toots but love my photos or book choices to follow the other account(s) instead

der.hans

@J12t Yes.

I would like to connect some, others I want to keep isolated

I think the isolated is easy and already functional

For the connected, rel=me would be nice, but a "follow all of me" or follow select list of accounts would be nice

@J12t I do both. I do have multiple accounts on Mastodon for multiple personas, et I also have a bunch of accounts on different platforms (#peertube, #pixelfed, #mobilizon #lemmy and some more obscure things)
