@J12t I believe we need to think very carefully about why it is usually considered necessary to maintain instance-specific, local identities. Is this a real requirement, in all cases, or sometimes simply path-dependent design?
@bobwyman imho it’s because app developers have been thinking 1) I’m building this great app, 2) let’s make it talk to others, and not building “fediverse native” apps. But then, the necessary federated identity infrastructure doesn’t seem to exist yet in the fediverse. So on your question: path-dependent, with the caveat that not apps will likely travel that entire path.
