 According to @mastodonusercount, there are currently 10,643,452 Mastodon accounts. At current rates, 300,000 new accounts are created per week. One month after reaching 10 million Mastodon accounts, it's highly likely we'll reach 11 million accounts by next week. 13 comments
 @atomicpoet @mastodonusercount @mastodon_daily_active_users would be a fun exercise to try and pin down, roughly, how that 2.4m "loss" breaks down @Aranjedeath Switter alone counts for 435,490 Mastodon accounts that no longer exist. @Aranjedeath It was mostly sex workers. The authorities pretty much forced that server to shut down. @atomicpoet yes, that was understood. they were collateral of the last round of internet speech regulation. So many people cannot even access banking services due to these laws...  @atomicpoet @mastodonusercount @mastodon_daily_active_users I've seen the total users drop a couple times though. It's possible those were just bugs in the bot since it seems to have issues every now and again but it was around the same time a couple of servers were shutting down  @erictgilmour Impossible to say, but that's unlikely. Every time I mention @mastodonusercount, someone says that it over counts.
So here's the counts from other services:
* the-federation.info: 8,223,165 Mastodon accounts
* fediverse.observer: 7,082,856 Mastodon accounts
* @mastodon_daily_active_users: 6,576,233 Mastodon accounts
It's my belief that @mastodonusercount counts every account that's been made including on servers that are no longer operable while the-federation.info counts accounts on active servers.
