And the community website has a translation into Arabic. Coincidence, or because it shows from which direction some of the funding is coming from?

All in all: Serious threat to #fediverse in the works here, is my feeling.

> Serious threat to #fediverse in the works here, is my feeling.

Why? (I mean, I can imagine reasons, just wondering what yours are.)

@bhaugen @sl007 @activitypub

I wrote about it on several ocassions, most recently here:

fediverse.town/t/the-fediverse

But it boils down to a combined "Tragedy of the Commons" and the Laissez Faire attitude that is inherent in most grassroots communities.

bhaugen

@humanetech
Thanks for the explanation.

Re "tragedy of the commons", are you familiar with Elinor Ostrom's work?

Not really, but familiar she coined the term.

I've been recommended some reading of her before, but it ended on my gigantic backlog of reading material (well, actually, due to continuous info overload it is only a theoretical backlog, as I will never read most of all the stuff on it)

Yes, I know.
Also no doubt that twitter needs money with -124 Mio. [2020]

This is why I believe that fairness needs force by the European Law.
And that is what I'm personally working on…

@sl007 Caution though, the bluesky lead seems to be positive towards blockchain pyramid schemes.
So better don't apply if you hate to be involved in that space (like I do).

Sebastian Lasse, redaktor.me

@schmittlauch

I am _very_ aware of this and personally I would never apply.

I trust everyone who would apply to ask what they want before they apply at the bird.
My hope is just that some will not give up to lobby for the good.

Trolli Schmittlauch 🦥

@sl007 Coincidentally, I'm currently looking for jobs, but was already skeptical whether to apply because of my lack of experience. Seeing the threat of being asked to deal with $MagicBlockchain was the coffin's nail then.

Same feeling. Not saying that never something good will come from blockchain. *Maybe* it will. In tech world sceptics far dominate proponents right now. But in the biz world just casually mention blockchain as a big corporate and the big $$$ flow in.

Twitter might well have blockchain somewhere around as marketing strategy, while still developing a solid protocol that potentially disrupts our current #fediverse

Wonder how many tech + biz savvy minds are at it at #twitter

@humanetech @sl007 If you look at Jack Dorsey, he's completely down the rabbit hole already. He's alluding to the coiners conspiracy myth that the deviation of the US$ from gold standard is the source of everything bad happening since, and claims "crypto"'s gonna save the world.

smallcircles (Humane Tech Now)

@sl007 @schmittlauch

I'd bet he did not. First tweet: 1800 replies, second tweet 359

He probably tweets via an indirection or something, where a campaign team puts his messages out to the world, and filters out useful responses.

@schmittlauch @sl007

Billionaires and their crazy dreams, right? :D

But they can afford to bet on the wrong horse and then still pivot in time, or be well-positioned even.

At government + central bank level all around the world they are investigating digital currencies and here blockchain or similar in concept technologies are deeply investigated. Making a jump to that horse, supporting, becoming a dominant player can be twitter's future too. And attach an interop thingy from their own shop.

@sl007 btw there's a fediverse channel on discord, people are interested and curious about ActivityPub, I think you might want to join

Sebastian Lasse, redaktor.me

@grishka
Yes.
Currently it is very hard for me to focus cause of the Afghanistan Situation.
Maybe you can post the channel on socialhub if it's not already mentioned.

wakest ⁂

@grishka @sl007 are you referring to the bluesky discord? or a different discord?

wakest ⁂

@grishka @sl007 glad you found the channel! I was the one who requested it from the mods. They had set up the discord with ONLY a mastodon channel and no fediverse one...

Gregory

@liaizon @sl007 LOL. I mean some people think that Smithereen is a reskin of Mastodon... And get very surprised when they learn that it's not. We might need to work on educating people better.

wakest ⁂

@grishka @sl007 The fact that its 2021 and we still dont really have a nice intro website that describes the fediverse as a whole ecosystem is quite sad

Gregory

@liaizon @sl007 there were multiple attempts at making one, latest being @dansup's fedidb.org but it's targeted more towards developers than end users. There's also fediverse.party.

wakest ⁂

@grishka @sl007 @dansup I know all these attempts. Fediverse.party I have helped with a bit here and there. But none of these are very welcoming to people unfamiliar with the space entirely. I guess the closest thing I can think of in this nature is the animated What is Mastodon video from a few years ago that is geared first towards explaining what federation *is*

Gregory replied to wakest

@liaizon @sl007 @dansup yeah I often find myself sending that video to people who are new to this concept

Sebastian Lasse, redaktor.me

@grishka @liaizon

Yes. See the minutes with the EU Tech Lead with impressions from talks with 6 MEPs before:
“It really seems to be a common misconception that mastodon is an equivalent of ActivityPub and so we should work more towards presenting the whole diversity of ActivityPub software, projects and the spritely future.”
