Introducing my new organic, all-natural intelligence search engine: Mark.

It's just this guy Mark. He'll do his best to answer your question, and he'll make up a reasonable-sounding answer real quick if he doesn't have one.

How will we scale? We'll hire more guys named Mark as demand ramps up.

@darius What Does It Mean To Be An Artist In A Post-Mark World

Pauxlll Kruczynski

@darius every good AI business loves a mark! Why, when they look at their users, they see a bunch of potential marks looking back at them.

Dan Bruno

@darius I think this is actually how my company has gotten by with all the other Dans we’ve had over the years

Greg Brown

@darius also announcing our financial pricing service add-on: Mark-to-market

:jan:‍:abreath:‍‍🌬:dandelion:

@darius Here at Dan Co. we understand nuance. That's why we've locked three advanced Mark's we call Dan's in a room. Need an answer? Ask the Dan's, and they'll each come up with an answer, and then give you the ones that overlap! It's out patent pending Degrees-of-Dan as an indicator for the confidence of your answer!

@darius Big Monty Python Australian philosophy department feels here

@darius This immediately reminds me of a sketch from a now mostly-forgotten comedy show called "Almost Live!" that just happened to be Bill Nye's first TV show.

They had a parody commercial for "Apple Keith". It's a new product from Apple. In addition to a top of the line Mac LC II, they'll also sell you...Keith! Keith will use your Mac for you so you don't have to waste your time. You can upgrade to Apple Leonard. Leonard buys his own granola.

Darius Kazemi

@roadriverrail I actually remember that show and I had no idea about the Nye connection!

Kit Rhett Aultman

@darius Indeed, here he is in his recurring character of Speed Walker:

And doing sciencey-stuff in a prototype of his later show:

@darius I'm not investing till I see your no-Wahlberg policy in writing.

Jessamyn

@darius Absolutely applying for this Mark job.

brennen

@darius if you get enough marks in a room with some reference material, maybe they can convincingly simulate the communications of a dude also named mark but he speaks a second language.

ProIsh

@darius I know more guys named mark than questions I have. This could work.

Michael C. McGreevy

@darius So there was this service called Ask Jeeves...

SIEM Shady

@darius
1. On your Marks.
2. Get set.
3. Search.

@darius @janellecshane one time i was collaborating with our head of design about chatbot interfaces. and we decided to set aside implementation and learn how folks would interact with a chatbot when it was maximally human. so i was the chatbot for the day. i would field any movie question that my coworkers had.

it occurs to me i never asked the head of design if she wrote up any findings from that 🤔 but it was fun!

@darius every time I get mad about issues with our library catalog, I’m like “shut it all down, people can call me if they need to know about a book”

noplasticshower

@darius mansplaining as a service is already cornered by chatGPT.

qu0th the void

@darius You’re too late. It’s called a “call center”.

mym

@darius you can upgrade by getting Mark an MLS!

benedict :psyduck:

@darius will you branch out to Marcs? How about offshoots like Marcus or Marquis? Maybe Marcys?

Robert van W¡II¡genburg

@darius back in the nineties when people didn't understand search engines yet, I briefly maintained a domain called Surf4Me.com ... not very succesfully. 'Where can I get a 50inch tv" was about the only question I remember.

The Evil Microwizard

@darius Has the Council of Marks been apprised of this? /s 😅

Mark Pesce

@darius @stufromoz I AM AVAILABLE FOR THIS WORK AT MY USUAL RATESES

patrick m.

@darius @noplasticshower brilliant! people love that personal touch. I want to invest in your new business venture!

AnAffordableWizard

@darius
"Too many essays are being handed in generated by Marks. They will not be given a mark and asked to resubmit. To get a mark you must not mark unless you are mark in which case it is acceptable to mark and receive a mark"

Mark Boszko

@darius @arthurwyatt hey if you need another guy, let me know

Qualifications: My name is Mark

Andrea Dooley

@darius @anildash I think anyone with Male Answer Syndrome can qualify for this job

kttxus

@darius it’s simple, they hate “socialists” more than they hate “conservatives “

David H. McCoy

@darius

Sounds great! From where can I sign up for your newsletter?

Supportive Tree-based lifeform

@darius
you joke but a manually curated non profit search engine would probably be better than google today. Algorithms work great until you add advertising and profit. This is why wikipedia is still useful but google search is not.

cowvin

@darius Careful, that might be patent infringement if you copy the modern AI language model "plausible bullshit" algorithm.

Mark Maguire

@darius This is very close to the mark indeed.

AlgoCompSynth by znmeb

@darius I think you've got something there! Mark my words - it'll be huge! 😈

Eric the Cerise

@darius

19th century chess engine, that was just a chessboard on a small dresser-thing with a dwarf hidden inside who was a reasonably good chess player, secretly moving chess pieces from inside.

TDonoval

@darius funny thing, I've always thought this is exactly how search engines work. I don't believe there's enough computing power in the world to search all that bullshit people are looking for online. But there might be just enough Marks.

Druid 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

@darius But what if Mark becomes sentient and starts integrating himself into the wider world? Do you have a plan? Perhaps pulling his tea and biscuits supply?

Pēteris Krišjānis

@darius I feel you are onto something there 🤔

Mark Asbach

@darius I‘m in this post and I don’t like it.

ole.mn

@darius "Despite the regular maintenance time it needs, the system exhibits impressive human-level intelligence and natural language processing skills. This new hype triggers many businesses to rush into investing in the new system, simply because they do not want to miss the mark."

franny gaede

@darius collegehumor did an uproariously funny series of videos called “if google was a guy” youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuK

Derek Bruff

@darius @hypervisible Now I’m wondering how many guys named Mark one could hire with OpenAI’s operating budget.

DELETED

@darius

Side note: There are more CEOs named Steve in the Fortune 500 than there are female CEOs.

RodC

@darius my almost teenage son already knows everything. I am happy to change his name to Mark.

Raphael

@darius Will the additional Marks be named "Mark 2", "Mark 3", and so on?

@darius My university sponsored that phone service until 2013. I hoped it would last forever, but clearly missed the mark.
