@atomicpoet At least one publication reached out to me to verify the number. Unfortunately I cannot verify the count from the @mastodonusercount bot; fetching total user numbers from all currently existing Mastodon servers using my own algorithm brings me to only 6.5M in comparison.

@Gargron @mastodonusercount Does your algorithm count instances that no longer exist?

Chris Trottier

@Gargron @mastodonusercount That’s definitely another consideration. For example, Switter is dead and that had over 100K accounts (last I checked).

@Gargron @mastodonusercount But that brings your count of 1.3M MAUs into starker focus because if your algorithm is only seeing 6.5M β€œlive” accounts, that’s pretty good retention.

mastodonusercount says it uses instances.social but on instances.social/list/old it states..
There are currently 18348 (9576 up) instances being tracked, with a total of 7822356 (3822238) users.
They do include pawoo.net in their count.

@atomicpoet @mastodonusercount I likewise suspect that is the reason for the difference, but of course it's hard to confirm.

@Gargron @atomicpoet @mastodonusercount Is it possible that accounts moving from server to server could be counted as duplicates? Am I right that a "Moved" account is actually a new account, with some data migrated and the old account redirecting to new?

@Gargron@mastodon.social @atomicpoet@mastodon.social @mastodonusercount@mastodon.social That sounds more in line with the Fediverse Observer number that I posted earlier (something like 7.X million).

Am I correct in my understanding that the stats from all instances are publicly available via API? And probably the only way to gather a completely accurate set of stats would be to build a list of all instances by scanning the Activity Pub messages and testing all the domains for the application? (Ie, to determine if they are Mastodon or say Calckey, or whatever.)

@unattributed @Gargron @atomicpoet @mastodonusercount Yes, instance discovery needs to be through some form of spidering, perhaps users' following and follower lists.

@Gargron @atomicpoet @mastodonusercount
And @fediverseobserver would corroborate the ~6.5M, since it's currently got 6.8M for Mastodon
