Meta is hurting.

And this latest round of layoffs is going to hurt them even more -- especially since they're happening piecemeal.

One reason I'm so skeptical about Meta's foray into the Fediverse is simply because I don't think anyone there wants to build something awesome for Meta.

If they suspect they're on the chopping block, why would anyone there be excited about that project?

I'm skeptical of anything to do with VR or AR being done by an advertising agency that has a software development wing. I don't know why anybody who wants to build cool things would work there.

But even beyond that, AR or VR is in the same realm as jetpacks and flying cars. Optics are super hard and it's one of those problems that has been a few years away from being solved for thirty years now. AR/VR isn't a software problem, heck it's not a traditional hardware problem. There's a ton of compromise involved and making a headset truly compelling for consumers is going to take small miracle. And that's without putting a stick through your owns spokes at every turn like Facebook seems to want to do.

@atomicpoet Didn't Meta do this to themselves? Any business where their customers feel used and abused can't be long for the world. At this point, Meta is polishing the proverbial turd.
