It's funny how, in a space of a year, we've gone from, "The Fediverse will fail because no one uses it" to "The Fediverse will fail because everyone will soon use it."
Some people just prefer doom and gloom, I guess.

@jeffjarvis I genuinely think this is an opportunity for journalists to offer feedback, help build something that is genuinely *usable* for their profession. @atomicpoet Journalists can't even bring themselves to leave a site run by someone who hates them, promotes right-wing extremism, and has contempt for the political system that protects journalism (among other things). They'll come to the fediverse if, and only if, Twitter completely collapses. I say that with sadness. @jeffjarvis @dangillmor @jeffjarvis Yeah, I get it. But I'll tell you why I'm befuddled. For nearly a decade, I read articles from tech journalists bemoaning how social media tech bros just want to build things without feedback from journalists, academics, humanities, etc. And I got to tell you, I took that on the chin! I personally went back to the drawing board and asked myself, "How can we build better social media?" So it is disappointing to not have more journalists on board. @atomicpoet @dangillmor @jeffjarvis Another reason why they won’t move is because the government and educational accounts wouldn’t spend the time and effort setting up their own server. Easier and cheaper to outsource their IT to the #muskrat. @atomicpoet @jeffjarvis I've been surprised that not more journalists are jumping on the massive opportunity thats here on the fediverse. My background is not even in journalism, and it's been obvious to me. Especially for independent journalists, where you depend on having building your own audience, there is simply so much value in being early to a new network. @Kitchi I think they will -- once ActivityPub (or something similar) becomes ubiquitous. @atomicpoet The question "can it scale" is a good question. The answer is, yes, but maybe not to actual celebrity scales. People can easily have people sized groups. But can anyone actually have a hundred million followers here without bankrupting themselves in hosting costs? Maybe not. Is that good or bad? Who knows. Doesn't make much difference to normal people. I'm not likely to need to pay for a hundred-million-follower server myself anyway. @pre That's how the tech works now. But not only can tech can be iterated and improved -- it *will* be iterated and improved. @atomicpoet Indeed. I may even get some time to work on my thing thing weekend ;) Though I'm not trying to address hundred-million-follower problems. @atomicpoet "The fediverse will fail because big networks don't use it" -> "The fediverse will fail because big networks do use it." 🙄 @atomicpoet If they smell vulnerability they'll make the play, and we'll see what happens. @atomicpoet the corollary to political reporting in which, no matter what happens, it’s always good news for Republicans @atomicpoet That’s exactly it. It’s easier to wail and moan then to actually support something. |
@atomicpoet
Journalists, mainly.
