Another banger of an Isaac Chotiner interview. This time he's grilling Barney Frank on this whole deal where he's been sitting on the board of Signature Bank.

newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/why

(For non US people: Frank was one of the most left leaning Congress members in recent US history. He introduced a lot of bank regulations after the 2008 financial collapse. Signature Bank is a bank that recently collapsed. It is remarkable that he was involved.)

@darius if isaac chotiner ever reached out to me for an interview i would fake my death and leave the country

I want to reread this every time I need to feel cozy and warm. Like, how many journalists out there can manage to get a politician to say "yeah I did it for the money" in basically any context?

srdesantis

@darius I think that’s more about Frank than Chotiner. Barney Frank has always been this way.

Darius Kazemi

@srdesantis He was my congressman for a number of years and I have a lot of love for him but I still think this is pretty remarkable

@darius as like ... a human... I have so many questions about why he declined the pension system like... what?

@darius This whole thing really bothers me...like what good is it to have someone who "believes in" strong regulation if they're explicitly saying they don't intend to actually regulate when they are one of the people in charge? If the board isn't ensuring compliance with those regulations, who the hell will? If the board has all the inside knowledge about how the regulations are enforced and how violations are found and isn't using that knowledge to ensure compliance...ya gotta wonder what they DO intend to use it for...his answer still seems pretty inconsistent to me.

@admin oh for sure, I think his answer is totally incoherent. the warm fuzzies are from a journalist laying that bare

Barry Parr

@darius Well, that board seat pays an eff-ton more than the pension he refused would have provided. Also, he's playing dumb about the problem with regulators going to work in the industries they regulate.

And he was one of our better legislators.

@darius @jalcine this is one of the most combative interviews i’ve ever read lmao

Dr. Dan Killam

@darius man Barney Frank is an expert spin doctor. Still sharp as a tack. The fact that he could hold his own with a ruthless interrogator like Chotiner when he was clearly in the wrong in this bank situation is frankly pretty impressive. Still left really disappointed he was on that sketchy bank board

Darius Kazemi

@dantheclamman yup. I think Chotiner getting as far as he did is like, incredibly impressive
