You see this story by @NaomiNix of the Washington post?

It's not so important that Meta is "considering" a new social network.

The real story is "decentralized model gains steam".

And what is that "decentralized model"? The Fediverse!

The mainstream media is now acknowledging that the Fediverse is cutting edge social media technology.

How are they going to sell ads on it? Or is this just a play to take out Twitter?

@djohngo Who knows? They're going to have to figure it out themselves.

"It hasn’t all been smooth sailing on Mastodon. Since its recent boom, some users have said they would prefer a company to play a more active role in curating what they see."

What? Who says that?

@abogical To be fair, I have heard a few people complain about lack of algorithms or company-driven curation. But I'm fine with that. The Fediverse will never be all things to all people.

@atomicpoet @abogical yea I’ve seen it too, just algorithms.

I countered with the value of providing better filtering and sorting functions client-side instead of bringing black-box algorithms to the fediverse, and they hadn’t really thought about that.

It seems for some, they’re so accustomed to an algorithmic feed they don’t see the point of something more direct like here. Or, they’re techy people into rec systems and haven’t thought through the implications.

@atomicpoet @NaomiNix @fediversenews myes… It will all crash over time if it gets an accumulative business model… So let’s hope they don’t see that kind of value.

As I tooted yesterday, @Gargron 's decentralized model has a potential to transcent capitalist economics. Meta, Google, etc. will always try to hijack the model for making profit in case they decide to attack.
My interest is to propagate the Mastodon model for other areas to initiate processes to overcome capitalism, not to integrate ads in my timeline.
The actual society will give birth to the new

Decentralized model owned by one giant corporation doesn't sound like a happy path to me.

Django

@atomicpoet @NaomiNix @fediversenews @glynmoody I assume they see control over federation as a useful lever which scales with the size of your community e.g. you can federate with their giant instance to be as long as you don’t strip out their ads. Also assume they’ll provide this as a free SaaS so new communities grow their network reach, like an extension of fb groups.

@atomicpoet @NaomiNix @fediversenews remember Google Talk. Every time I see people discussing this as if it's a good thing, I wish we instead found a way to exploit this bleep of interest, not passively discuss it.

I have to wonder if Zuck's primary motivation is offloading Meta's moderation responsibility. Who cares if the garden is unwalled so long as he can show ads and harvest info.
