When you arrive to Mastodon, try to follow at least 200-300 accounts.

As there is no algorithm shoveling delayed content into your feed, this place will feel sparse until you hit the right threshold of active connections. It really springs to life, though.

@alexwild I’ve seen quite a few people saying they miss Twitter because their timeline has little content or engagement but they’re only following a few dozen accounts. So, thank you for putting this message out there.

Cristy

@alexwild @NorCal_Lynne I’m following almost 700 people and I suspect many have become inactive on here. It’s … quiet. Very quiet.

Bowreality

@NorCal_Lynne @alexwild I think a lot of people are used to (trained to) just get content spoonfed. Here you have to be active, engaged to receive. It’s like watching sports vs doing sports.

@bowreality @NorCal_Lynne @alexwild I like that analogy.

I do need to branch out more - I just have that introvert tendency to wait until invited 😂 🤷‍♀️

Bowreality

@hicoo @NorCal_Lynne @alexwild I think part of it is really to unlearn being passive. Like, boost, comment and you’ll have a good life and fun here.

@alexwild

I will not go back to an algorithm deciding who and what I see.

My feed here is so much more interesting, diverse, and fun than FB or the Bird ever were.

When I was on the other sites I had to limit my time because it stressed me out so much. But I come here to relax and have fun.

A completely different and exponentially better experience.

@alexwild Uhm, that's highly subjective. I think a better universal advice would be to find hashtags that match one's interests and follow them first, then look for people to follow personally in that feed.

Alex Wild

@dmbaturin the hashtag follow function here is phenomenal. Found a lot of folks that way.

Rachael Ludwick

@alexwild @dmbaturin it’s so good! I was intermittently checking some but then followed those hashtags so serendipitous and delightful posts from random folks in my feed.

Alex Wild

@r343l @dmbaturin Did I ever mention how happy I am to see you here? It’s like the old days.

Rachael Ludwick

@alexwild It’s small enough that I’m not (yet) using lists and not the whole following (and of course no company switching me back to algo timeline of ENGAGE OUTRAGE ENGAGE which is partly why I started using lists.)

s1m0n4

@alexwild @dmbaturin how can you follow a hashtag? I have to search for them but I can't save a hashtag to show up on my feed

Petra van Cronenburg

@s1m0n4 @alexwild @dmbaturin Some apps might not have the function yet. Via browser it works:
Search for a hashtag, click it. Then you see it over the hashtag timeline. At the right you have the follow icon, a person with a "+". Click that and you get the postings with this hashtag into your own timeline.

MettEagle

@s1m0n4 @alexwild @dmbaturin it's easy with megalodon app. There are little icons in the right of the #hashtag.

@dmbaturin @alexwild Completely agree. You can have a full time line following just a few hashtags.
It is one of the big pluses of Mastodon.

Jeroen-bart Engelen

@alexwild Also: find a server that has a theme you are interested in, and watch the local feed.

@yeep That's exactly what I did, best decision ever! :blobcataww: @alexwild

Steph

@alexwild Couldn’t agree more! I even found a server with amazing people.

Kabi-nyan :verified_trans:

@alexwild@mastodon.online Or just a dozen or so people who reshare everything under the sun

fc

@alexwild That seems a little over the top and aggressive to me - I'd say follow some hashtags and let your follows grow from the folks you 'meet' there. I don't care if I ever get to following 200 accounts, unless they grow organically during my time here.

@fc @alexwild When I switched instances, I actually started from scratch with zero follows because my previous list got way too overwhelming and loud. The first thing I did was follow all the hashtags I love and a couple of accounts I engaged with the most. It all grew slowly over time, but I've got a lot of control over the number. I don't want to go past a limit as I need to make sure I get to keep up with everyone's posts. I was never that fussy when I was at Twitter a long time ago, btw. This is feeling more like a quiet coffee shop with lots of books and old school board games around me.

@haydenthorne @alexwild Yeah, actually, when I addressed the 'follows' issue I completely overlooked the fact that following hashtags is an end unto itself, and can fill your feed with interesting and incredibly varied stuff even if you never follow any of the accounts served up.

And I agree, to me this is like taking drinks from the garden hose out side in the summer vs twitter's firehose.

Oh, and? *Using* hashtags in your posts gets you seen, too. When I first got here, I started hashtagging every damn thing I could in my posts, and trying to post like crazy, pretty random and mundane stuff, to get engagement; I deliberately erred on the side of dumb overshares. Some might say I still do. 😜

TL;DR: #Hashtags are your friends.

@alexwild
Good information. Thanks for the tip. 👍

@alexwild
Yeah, following 700 and growing! I had to hide boosts for a lot of the folks I follow though or it's way too overwhelming!

Hayden Thorne

@EllenInEdmonton @alexwild The mute function is a godsend. I've got a few prolific boosters on my TL, and things got pretty busy pretty quick.

Aranjedeath

@alexwild yup, and aim for a wide collection. You can always prune things later (because, yep, at a certain point it becomes a river again)

MJ Lee

@alexwild Following 200-300 accounts is against my religion.

ubi

@alexwild I follow about a 100 accounts and get a good enough feed. I think it really depends on the people that you follow more than the quantity.

Also hashtags.

Elz de Korte

@alexwild Following hashtags is a nice thing to do as well.

Isaac

@alexwild it seems that following people outside my channel doesn't show their posts on my feed, though I might be wrong

The Death Of Robins

@alexwild Like many others, I found that following the right hashtags, rather than trying to find my old Twitter people, made it happen for me. I then felt secure enough to finally close my Twitter account three days ago.

Scott Buckley

@alexwild That would be great, but I have no idea how to find even 10 accounts that I'm interested in following. I never used Twitter so I can't "migrate" my followees from there.

Delia

@DrWraith @alexwild start by searching for hashtags of topics you are interested in; then look at the people posting around that topic. If what they have to say looks interesting, follow them (you can unfollow later if you find you’re mistaken).

RoBo

@alexwild can you do this from the mobile app. Think it's only desktop which is a pain

3wombats

@alexwild And # ## I found that difficult to remember. Still do

Jessica Stewart

@alexwild yes. I follow anyone whose posts I like (you can always change your mind!) Who cares how many followers they have or who sees it? I’m here for the conversations.

Petra van Cronenburg

@alexwild This. Another great help to find like-minded people is to #follow #hashtags (and use them, they are the "glue" in the Fediverse and searchable). Brings the posts into your timeline.
Besides normal words, we have hashtags adding the "todon" of mastodon to a word like #mosstodon for #moss lovers, #bugstodon, #histodon for #history lovers or hashtags like #florespondence or #sporespondence. And activities like #SilentSunday or #CuratorPrompts. With Hashtags, you open new worlds!

Nacho

@alexwild I've struggled I'll be honest. I don't have how to find accounts. I tried to mine the follows of accounts I like to find more accounts but it only ever shows be a handful of accounts. For example, I can only see two of accounts you follow and about 20 accounts that follow you.

Cecelia

@Nachodramatico @alexwild Depending on how you access Mastodon, you can use the local timeline or search to see a feed of people on your server. If you’re on a server that caters to folks who have interests similar to your own, you can find cool people to follow that way.

Brian Hawthorne

@Nachodramatico @alexwild Start by following hashtags for topics that interest you and then follow people who post interesting things with those hashtags.

Joshua Roach

@alexwild I’m only following 70 accounts and my timeline is absolutely packed! There is a lot of interaction going on here and I like it.

S.K.Misra

@joshua @alexwild But your profile is showing only 29 followings !🥺🥺

💛🤍d0min1kA l1liA💜🖤

@alexwild its not really necessary to follow that many. i follow like around 50 accs, and my timeline is full

kaleb

@alexwild

I only follow who follow me. So begining is always slow

Kristen78

@alexwild hard disagree. I’m quite happy with just a handful of accounts, and one “group” account for Trek fans. That alone guarantees lots of delightful, silly, or thoughtful Star Trek content when I check in, and a smattering of other things I want to see.

I don’t want hundreds of new posts in my feed every day. I just want content that doesn’t leave me angry and rage-replying to everyone.
