Microsoft tried to make reverse-WINE, failed, gave up, and added some light affordances to a VM. This is hailed as an important innovation, while WINE is considered par for the course.
It's a typical part of the proprietary/FOSS double standard. When a proprietary system doesn't interoperate with a FOSS system, it's the FOSS system's fault, and when a FOSS system interoperates with a proprietary system imperfectly... it's the FOSS system's fault.
Similar problems are seen with LibreOffice and the open document standards. When LibreOffice handles DOCX incorrectly, it's "LibreOffice is broken," and when Word doesn't handle ODT correctly, it's "Why did you send me this broken LibreOffice document?"
