can we just kill usb-a to usb-c cables already so manufacturers are forced to put usb-c on their computers ffs

@nano doesn't work well right now because pc makers put no usb-c cables on their shit besides like what apple (this is in my experience though)

nano

@Connie thats exactly my point
making all the cables usb-c to usb-c increases demand for usb-c ports which in turn forces manufacturers to add them

Connie Leo

@nano i really hope they catch on because i want a universal cable standard. still glad we're free from the worst one which is micro-usb

chesapeake :verified:
@nano @Connie actually it will just make me have to buy more fucking stupid dongles
Susul 🏳️‍⚧️

@nano that would make all older computers obsolete tho, which would kind of suck

nano

@susul provide 2 usb-a ports in the end of the transition, just like how motherboard still has parallel and serial for YEARS after usb

Мя :sparkles_lesbian:

@nano but what about this funny problem USB-C <-> USB-C have

chesapeake :verified:
@mo @nano ideally the fix for that would be that you would be prompted on one device to choose who charges who
nano

@astrr @mo this isn't a fix this is intended behaviour for usb-c. usb-a is a host connector, usb-b is a slave connector, usb-c is bidirectional, meaning its smart enough to talk to your operating system and perform handshakes to determine what is going on

Phone at 10%: "What the fuck"

@mo @nano: Easy to fix. Just plug an USB-C->USB-A converter and an USB-A->USB-C-> converter at the end of your USB-C cable.

snickerbockers

@mo @nano lets be real, the only reason people like USB-C is that the connectors aren't constantly falling apart like micro and they're not difficult to plug in like USB-A.

Nobody actually cares about the weird bullshit where either end can be host. they just want a connector that isn't terrible.

nano

@snickerbockers @mo i actually do care about the bidirectional nature of usb-c quite a lot, its come in handy lots and lots of times

@nano @snickerbockers @mo yeah USB-C isn't much besides a shape, a good shape, a shape that everybody should use.

Except for all the companies that haven't figured out how to make USB-C dongles, and force us to double dongle.

And the companies that remove headphone jacks because fuck you, consumer, purchase extra dongles for no reason.

Just an old goat

@snickerbockers @mo @nano I'm a USB geek who cares about all the weird cool bullshit, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority.

Bjornsdottirs

@snickerbockers @mo @nano USB-A is difficult to plug in? only had an issue in low light myself.

Tathar is dragons! ΘΔ

@nano

Why have hardware standards gone to crap as of late, and why is USB the worst offender?

DELETED

@mo @nano This, along with the USB-C spec just being absolutely unholy hellish nightmare disaster in general, are why I will keep using old full size USB-A and USB-B ports on everything I can

Plus C is a pain in the ass to solder

Wilfried Klaebe

@SigmaOne @mo @nano yeah, where to plug those USB-A mouse receiver dongles on C-only notebooks?

DELETED

@wonka @mo @nano Adapter time

Or you can do a DIY Perks and solder your own C connector on there

Bjornsdottirs

@SigmaOne @mo @nano should I build a DIY USB std. B socket for my unicomp

Julia :verified_trans:

@mo@mastodon.ml @nano@yiff.life I can plug my laptop into itself with usb-c to usb-c and it started charging itself

@mo @nano A phone and a laptop can just have software that lets the user pick which one gets charged, but I wanna know whether my Sony headphones or my Pixel Buds are more subby :blobfoxthinksmart:

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

@mo @nano oh my God, my phone is a bottom? This explains so much

LucasVL
@mo @nano exact reason why i hate using C to C cables. Anytime i see something without a USB A connector i get genuinely pissed because they do not always do the same thing and should not be expected to
Kaleidoscope Dad

@mo @nano my (Android) phone charges when plugged on my macbook. Can’t charge my macbook on another one tho 😔

PulkoMandy

@mo @nano and when you get two usb-c ports, you can plug your laptop into itself, which creates yet more problems (not only with charge, but with recursively discovering new devices connected too)

Mechadragon Yria :transbian:

@mo @nano in sure I saw different results depending on which I plugged in first.
Also changing the data mode affected charging.

And I'm sure I had a device on a wall charger change between fast and show charge depending on which side up it's connected to.

Plus my new Surface laptop CAN charge over wall USB-C to C. But battery brick C to C... Well I have seen it work multiple times. But it's not reproducible. Sometimes it works after an amount of plugging and unplugging various ends and directions, but I can't determine a reliable incantation.

@mo @nano Now imagine a buggy charger being subbier than the phone. You plug it in and the phone charges the power grid.

@ralf_muschall <insert obvious "in soviet russia, ..." joke here>

@mo @fasterthanlime @nano and what happen if you loop two ports of the same laptop?

Григорий Клюшников

Mo RJD² :sparkletrans:, the charging direction is controlled through software

mittorn

@grishka @mo @nano i think, we need ability to add mechanical switch to cable, acting like OTG pin in case software unavailiable

@mo @nano I continue to maintain that the correct solution to this from a UX perspective is to sell unidirectional USB-C cables that only permit power to flow in the direction of the giant arrows that would be printed on it. Thus it's real easy for users. Just follow the arrows on the cable.

Mx. Alba :heart_nb:

@mo @nano laptops usually have only one USB-C port that allows power coming in. So if you want to charge another device from your laptop... Plug it into one of the other ports.

Night

@mo @nano I tried this with my Framework laptop and it stole charge from my phone, but on the second try it charged the phone

@mo @nano I feel immensely validated in my usb c hate

@mo Why would one use his phone to charge anything at all? The only use case I can come up with is some sort of e-cigarette/vaporizer, but you'd better not use anything but the wall charger with those things unless you want to get the board fried 🤷

Bryn :heart_cyber:

@mo @nano My phone is so subby compared to my laptop that it even says so when I try to override it

OpenComputeDesign

@mo @nano The solution is simple, Burn USB C to the ground and start fresh with something actually good.

But until then, use a USB C to USB A charge cable, with a USB C to USB A OTG cable. (I have actually done this, it worked)

Charlotte 🦝 θΔ

@nano computer cases should be forced to include a usb type c port in the front. my mobo has usb type c in the worst position

Lana Sarah Aurelia

@nano@yiff.life ahem. while I appreciate the sentiment...
you still have to give old computers a chance, btw.

I don't have the means to get a new PC.

MudMan

@nano I have enough A to C and C to A adaptors that I can loop them around in a circle. I'm good.

(seriously, 90 degree C to C adaptors. You need them, you don't even know it).
