Problem with the web is that there’s an “Internet priesthood” that wants to keep you from understanding it.

Google is the worst offender of this.

They want you to regard the web as difficult and incomprehensible.

And that they, holders of the holy texts, are the only ones with enough mystical knowledge to understand the opaque rituals and incantations of the true Internet (hallowed be its name).

@atomicpoet Google constantly changing its analytics system and metrics is a prime example. Small businesses that run a website can hardly keep up. Pfft.

quite. Also, there should be a BSc degree in #Amazon pricing.

And now you've got me going, containers have got out of hand as well...

@mkarliner @luthien1126 @atomicpoet yes, and related, be critical when consensus is that something is "too complicated, use a managed service".

My question when a mananged service is proposed is:

'Is this a core compentence of this business?'

If it is, then spend the money to get it working in-house. If not, get a managed service.

I've seen companies outsource the very functions that are their USP.

@mkarliner @gerbrand @atomicpoet Outsourcing is the easy way out when there are resources to spare, which isn't always the case for small businesses.

For instance, in our startup, maintaining our website is necessary for online presence and generating awareness. But outsourcing that task is out of the question for practical reasons. So imagine the conundrum whenever Google tweaks something in their analytics.

@atomicpoet — that’s right. The programming priesthood. In the beginning we thought personal computers would be the end of that, but given enough time it has reasserted itself. They know what’s best for us. Just coincidence that it’s what licks them in control again.

@atomicpoet it's inextricable from "tech bro" culture, we need to start there
