@evan I’ve been really excited about new servers like Takahe, but I’m not sure why I want one that only runs on one company’s infrastructure

@anildash @evan twitter only runs on one company’s infrastructure

@anildash @evan it’s just another option, but yeah it’s already a little concerning how much runs behind Cloudflare already. Ultimately it needs to be easy to have Mastodon (or compatible platforms) anywhere and everywhere.

Still hoping someone puts together some kind of Mastodon-in-a-box product, something similar to a router like a pre-installed configurable raspberry pi that someone could buy, hook into their home network, visit the local IP and they're off.

Obviously privacy and security concerns there though.

@hybridhavoc @vmstan @evan I’ve been thinking how cool it would be to run something like Takahe as a local instance, and expose it via Tailscale to the web.

Raspberry Pi doesn't allow commercial redistribution but there are other platforms, like BeagleBone, that do.

Ideally it'd have dyndns and letsencrypt included, and could use upnp to ask the router to send ports 80 and 443 to it.

You'd need to request the hostname at purchase time. It could be configured by the vendor and shipped to you. It could even be printed on the case! https://yourname.fedi-at-home.example/

I think it's a cool option.

@anildash @evan They're all cool, as long as open standards make moving between them fairly easy

@evan @anildash Sounds like neither you nor I want an account on Wildebeest, but I at least would like more ActivityPub users to talk to. I welcome anything that provides options to people whose plan B is Twitter. I'm building up quite a list of projects I'm really excited about despite having no plans to ever use them myself, starting with Mastodon. Very happy to add Wildebeest to the list!
