@aral I'm literally on social media because it allows me to do what I can't elsewhere: Get in touch with people I don't know from different parts of the world. Get to know people I didn't know. Reading about things in different parts of the world that aren't considered to be 'real news' enough for regular media. I don't want to think small, totally the opposite actually. Maybe this is not what you were thinking of but that's why I'm here. 7 comments

There's a lot I agree with in https://ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-small-web/ but there's also a lot of things I find important and valuable that aren't glossed over.   Same, Anne. It's so amazing to meet someone who is just living a totally different life. Find some common ground, help them or get some help, learn a little teach a little-- and it's not the start of a life-long friendship. It's just two people enriching each other through what they share-- and what they *don't* share. That's why I keep coming back to social media as much as keeping in touch with "regulars" and people I've known for years. @futurebird @anneroth I'm loving your posts, but, yeah, things can be very different. @futurebird @anneroth I lost people after G+ shut down even though they were on Twitter, they never showed up in my feed. Now they are reappearing and it's wonderful. Spotty but not awful. |

@anneroth yeah really. It's interesting how few people are saying that in the replies though -- you, me, @futurebird @mnl and virtually nobody else. And all the boosting and "yes I agree" on this viral post by an influencer, with almost no interaction between commenters, is exactly what everybody's saying is bad about Twitter but (in their minds) doesn't happen here! 🤣🤣🤣
