We intentionally left out the option to revert back to the previous hidden action buttons in the timeline so we could get a sense of what you thought. Preference seems pretty evenly split so we will be adding back the previous way to access post actions as an option in the next build. Thanks for all the feedback! 🙂

@ivory OMG, I thought this was going to be an alpha slot. Nearly had a heart attack.

Raygan Kelly :hatbird:

@ivory THANK YOU! I hadn’t gotten around to tooting at you yet but I would sorely miss the little hidden action drawer.

Ryan Legg

@ivory I think I like the new version better but I see the need for the option

Ryan Goodlett :wily_ufo:

@ivory I’m so confused, what hidden action buttons?

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@ryangoodlett When you tap on a post to reveal the reply, fave, boost, etc. Current build has them inline with the post.

Ryan Goodlett :wily_ufo:

@ivory oh, I guess I didn’t notice anything different.

Dr. Jorge Caballero

@ivory I like both options tbh. The one thing that seems a bit off is that, with the action bar in-line, I find myself intuitively tapping on the body of the post and expecting it to navigate to the post (i.e. same as a full right-to-left swipe)

Inari :acefox:

@ivory I’m for always visible, but customization is an excellent way forward :3

Adam Gessaman :vcoffee:

@ivory thanks. My opinion on the older way completely reversed in the past two weeks. I’m now not sure which one I’ll end up settling on, so options are appreciated.

Cooner :raccoon:

@ivory Do you mean the “tap on a post to open/hide the icons drawer” thing? I’d love to have that back, thanks. :)

edgar :birdsite:

@ivory thanks for bringing the preference back as an option.

Alwyn Soh :sgflag:

@ivory this action buttons area great! Must make them small by default please.

Michael Stanclift

@ivory it’s fine but it feels like how every other app does it. The expansion is like how I’d expect Tweetbot/Ivory to work.

Brad R

@ivory is your profile picture going to be added as an icon?

jefOS :apple_inc:

@ivory Y'all have made an app I really enjoy so far, looking forward to the finished version.

Josiah Wilson :pmgpurple:

@ivory Thanks! I definitely like the clean look of having them hidden but was going to try "living with it" for a little while. This is the only tweak so far that has felt like a step back!

Nate Barham

@ivory 🥳 Thanks! Definitely glad to hear that.

Maxwell White

@ivory could you give us an option to turn off the dramatic falling animation when we swipe close an image? Its so wonky

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@max Eventually. That animation is like 10 years old. 🙃

Maxwell White

@ivory cool thanks... The way it tumbles feels like it gives me micro vertigo

Orren Merton

@ivory I’m a fan of the persistent action buttons. Makes Ivory faster to use.

andrei

@ivory it would be great if it were possible to have the buttons reduce size as you reduce the text size in the app just to have them use less space if you want to have more content in the feed

Janak J Parekh

@ivory I really like the one tap to view comments, personally, and love the inline counts. I’m glad you’re making it a preference. I _think_ the current view might be the better default, as it aligns with other Mastodon clients?

Nick McGuire

@ivory I think I’d return to them being hidden by default personally.

It feels like the action buttons plus the retweet / private mention badges eat into the amount of posts that are visible

Derek P. Collins

@ivory FWIW I’m a huge fan of the exposed action buttons!

Eric Leamen

@ivory We are opinionated users but appreciate you all considering our feedback! 💜

For mentions in the notifications tab, maybe you could implement the same swipe gesture to open post details? I’m so used to the Tapbots way being tap for actions, swipe for details.

Tim Mackey 🦥

@ivory initially I hated the actions drawer because it hid all the buttons and action counts. I got used to it quickly though, and seeing all the buttons shown by default today has made it clear how much I like the clean timeline you get when the drawer is hidden!

Dan Ryan :dryan:

@ivory absolutely prefer the always visible bar myself

kcǃ

@ivory oh good, I hoped there would be a way to hide it again! it’s oddly weird to try and retrain my finger brain to go from tap then star, to just star! 🤣 having the number next to the stars and boosts etc is great.

Sukrit Tan

@ivory the buttons feel oversized in the timeline to me compared to other apps.

Might be the color is to prominent or the line weight is too heavy: but I think they stick out too much ATM

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@actsukrit the color is pretty subdued. Are you running the latest version? 🙃 if so, there’s also an option for smaller icons in the settings.

Sukrit Tan

@ivory I didn’t see the option there! Yeah, this size is much less intrusive for me

Thanks for the response!

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@actsukrit Also the color of them is tied to the lightest text color of the theme. So if the icons are very bold in contrast, it might be because you have "high contrast" mode enabled. 🙂

Senhor Schlauschlau 🪐

@ivory @actsukrit any plans on reflecting the individual icon size also in detail view?

Kyle Bashour

@ivory IMO the default for always visible should also be the small style

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@kylebshr We think we will get less support feedback doing it the way we did vs small by default. 🙂

Kyle Bashour

@ivory fair enough :) lots of precedence in other apps for that smaller style but doesn’t mean it’s a good thing

Stan Fletcher

@ivory I like the actions buttons always visible and the 1 tap to boost (without confirmation)

Jack Regan :screwattack:

@ivory Out of curiosity, when you add the option back to hide them, will tapping on a post give you the fold out buttons like before or take you to the detail page?

Jack Regan :screwattack:

@ivory Gotcha! Personally I’d love a hybrid approach where you could hide the buttons but tapping still took you to the detail page - because that page has all the same buttons as the drawer anyway (right?). But totally get you can’t make everyone happy 🙂

evan in the shell :sdf:

@ivory thanks for doing this! I vastly prefer the new method

Bill Lloyd

@ivory thank you. Was going to chime in to ask to hide them:)

Ben Cunningham

@ivory this is so much more usable for me now, thank you!

Eduardo

@ivory YES! I just updated and honestly hate it a bit, I want to see buttons and counts only if I choose to. Thanks!

mb

@ivory thank you! So much better and one less tap

Josh Z

@ivory Love the action buttons, thank you so much for such a great addition to the app!

Jason Moser :verified_paw:

@ivory love the new buttons in lieu of the previous hidden. I always liked the hidden in Tweetbot but having them ever present is nice (as is the icon!!)

Kevin Yank

@ivory Thank you! Very much want to read without action buttons, but tapping to expand and see the buttons and counts would be ideal!

Mike Cohen

@ivory I love the new inline action buttons.

John Lagomarsino

@ivory phew! This is, no joke, the #1 reason I prefer Tweetbot and Ivory over other clients.

Leon Cowle

@ivory Yes, definitely prefer the option to have the action bar hidden — I have strong muscle-memory to tap to see actions!

Brandon Newendorp

@ivory Definitely prefer to have them hidden — my timeline is pretty noisy with them always visible, especially on iPad.

(niko)

@ivory Also the swipe to like currently doesn’t work anymore for me, would be a big pain if that would be missing!

Zach

@ivory I personally prefer the new look/functionality.

Stefano J. Attardi

@ivory Love this change. Even though the buttons are always showing, overall it is “less UI”. No need for a drawer and a swipe gesture. Much cleaner design.

Ryan Goodlett :wily_ufo:

@ivory as a long time Tweetbot user I like the old way. Tab to show actions.

Kaveh

@ivory can you add an option to make them smaller or at least scale the size somehow it’s dynamic text? Next to the small text, they look too big.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@kavehv There's an option in the display settings to make the icons smaller already.

ms. information

@ivory vastly prefer this new build, thanks! :)

April

@ivory Like count is useless btw, if a toot is from a different server the like count is inaccurate

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@april yes, but someday this could be resolved or improved. And it’s useful for your own posts and good enough if you happen to be on an active server looking at the posts of…instance-mates?! 🙃

GeneBean

@ivory I like the new way but can see the appeal of the other so I think options are good.

Robert Gaugl

@ivory Thank you. Just wanted to ask to get my clean timeline without action buttons back.

Harry Brown

@ivory Nice! It was so clean and tidy with them hidden but I found the extra click held me back from interacting as much.

Rob

@ivory Pfew. Thanks for bringing back that option (soon?).

Sebastian Samulczyk

@ivory Small icons with no labels are so perfect!🤷🏻‍♂️

Marco

@ivory I was thinking it must have been a bug; OMG what a relief!

Lex Postma

@ivory glad it’s coming back. Though the small icon option isn’t that intrusive, I prefer to hide them

Max von Webel

@ivory I know for verybody but me is very excited but I really liked the uncluttered UI much more.

Mike McNamara

@ivory Thank you!!! Sorry for being so fussy 🙈 As someone who primarily consumes content on Tweetbot and Ivory, I vastly prefer the hidden action buttons. I appreciate you bringing back the option!

Daniel

@ivory thanks! Since I saw the update I was keeping a device from updating the app.

Don’t like how cluttered the action buttons make the timeline.

sph/nx

@ivory I really like the new way. It feels like I’m much closer to the interaction this platform gives me.

Gus

@ivory seeing icons on each post is too repetitive. Great to have the option to go back

DELETED

@ivory I would love to have them as an option. I’m so used to it through the years that it’s hard to let go 😇

Alejandro Martinez

@ivory it’s a tricky design problem. The icons on every post clutter to much but i do love one tap to go to detail. If there was a way to declutter actions while keeping one tap to detail…

paul

@ivory @alexito4 sounds great. Can’t wait for next update!

Alejandro Martinez

@ivory could you guys consider adding a swipe left options (like for swipe right) for when the drawer is turned off? In that case the swipe to go ti detail feels redundant and a waste of precious triggers ^^

Jeroen Schaper

@ivory I like the new option, but I like the hidden actions a bit more. One thing that I slightly dislike about the new actions is that there’s a lot of spacing above and below the icons.

Paul McBride

@ivory I like this new way to much better. Actually interacting feels like a first class action now.

fatlazycat

@ivory actually it’s one of main reasons prefer Ivory over day Mona. Much prefer the cleaner look. 99% of the time I never use the action buttons so good to be hidden.

Joshua Hürzeler

@ivory I love them directly visible. Hope this option stays as option. But with the small icons. This was also the feature I missed on tweetbot (past due I not using twitter anymore)

Jordan Borth

@ivory awesome. The timeline feels so calm with the actions hidden. I also enjoy the drawer animation 😊

Fede Sánchez

@ivory I prefer single tap to go into the details of a post. It’s simpler and follows others apps behaviors! Thanks for adding it.

DELETED

@ivory love it!! Small buttons are perfect!

Karim Le Vallois

@ivory Perfect as I keep accidentally hitting post actions as I’m scrolling. Plus I like the minimal look, so the drawer was great.

Paul Stockton

@ivory I was happy to try and also give it a few days to adjust to so I appreciate what you were trying to do.
However, if you hit sections of your timeline or in this example viewing the shorter replies to your post, it imho looks messy and cluttered, take your eyes back and you are mainly looking at a screen full of repetitive icons overpowering the actual content.
Useful to try but old way for me thank you.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@pauls there’s also a small icon option which helps a bit. 🙂

Greg M

@ivory after seeing @pauls post. I do agree. I like them hidden, or at least an option to hide them. 🙂 I did switch to small to help a little.

Paul Stockton

@ivory I did try that initially and they look weird shrunk down - I figured that if I have to try and get used to it I may as well go big or go home 😂

Jonas_W

@ivory wow, this really confuses my muscle memory. I accidentally open detail views all the time 😅
Thanks for bringing the old approach back 😊

MV

@ivory I’m 100% on board with the new tray.

Karim Le Vallois

@ivory Swipe to favourite seems to be broken in the latest build.

Micha

@ivory Just for the sake of completeness: I like the non-hidden version. Saves my some “typing”.

Luca Campelo

@ivory I think it would be better received if the small action icons option were the default. (But definitely add a option for no icons how it were before!)

Ryan Hyde

@ivory I definitely prefer it the new way. Hiding them was the only part about tweetbot that I didn’t like, and I was sort of resigned to it here as well. I’m super glad we’ll get the option! Obviously there are people who super prefer hidden buttons.

Benjamin Richardson

@ivory I love that the buttons are always visible but I love even more that you’re giving people a choice! Can’t wait for the final version.

Jonathan Joelson

@ivory Thanks for being thoughtful about this! I personally like them hidden because I don’t interact with 95% of the posts in my timeline and so the buttons needlessly clutter things for me.

Filip Radelic

@ivory sorry, I gotta be blind, where is that option supposed to be? 😅 I loved the hidden buttons, especially as a Mini user, ans gestures had everything I needed anyway. Please never remove that option 🙏

Kevin Becker :donor:

@ivory I'm happy to see the buttons. Everything needed too many taps and/or swipes to access before

Rubén Maté

@ivory love having toggled on at the main timeline but when seeing replies would love to have it hidden.

Edelheid

@ivory I just switched to the drawer again since it has always been a personal preference, and…

I checked my favourite posts out of curiousity and having those buttons out in the open made me unintentionally favourite plenty. I guess I must use the drawer. 😅
