@atomicpoet hosting companies have a big role in enabling this, just like they did with WordPress.

Right now, it's technical to host your own instance so only a few would do it.

Hopefully soon, hosting companies will have a one click install to have your own mastodon domain for five bucks a month.

@chrisshaw @atomicpoet I believe Digital Ocean just released a tutorial and also have a one-click solution or some other thing to ease installs on their hostings

@itsmistermoon @atomicpoet yes, I've seen that. But DO is still somewhat technical for the average Joe

I think we'll see something a lot more SaaS like where you pay five bucks and get landed straight into the admin console of your own mastodon.

The early days of WordPress were quite technical but it got easier and cheaper as time went on.
