What people don't understand about running an instance:

You're not just hosting content for accounts on your instance.

You're hosting content for EVERYTHING that federates with you.

My Pixelfed instance only has 8 accounts and less than 1,000 image posts.

I have 50 GB of disk space, yet I'm at 80% capacity.

As the Fediverse grows, federation itself requires more data.

Look at this graph to see what's happened during the past 14 days on peerverse.space

For 6 solid months, only 40% of my disk capacity was used.

Then when the #TwitterMigration happened, it slammed my Pixelfed instance hard.

Doesn't matter that it only hosts 8 users.

It's still a node that redistributes content across the Fediverse.

The other thing about the Fediverse that people don't realize is that despite only a few hundred accounts being followed on my Pixelfed instance, I end up federating with 1000s of instances.

Now did I set out to federate with 1000s of instances? No.

What happens is whenever someone comments, boosts or interacts with my instance in any way, my instance gets federated with their instance.

@atomicpoet I only log on periodically & scroll through whatever I see - so just posted a variant of this:

a question from a newer user

should those of us that can, be on multiple instances & paying a bit to each?

I am currently on 2 - 1 big & 1 small - and paying a bit to each

I welcome suggestions/opinions from anyone

@leslore If you can, use a small instance with good moderation.

Also if you can, learn how to self-host your own instance.

@atomicpoet @leslore How does self-hosting help for this?

Curious, since I just entered fediverse and did so from my own servers (one Mastodon, one Pixelfed) and got concerned with that decision seeing your numbers.

Chris Trottier

@anders @leslore For moderation? You'll have to read my previous threads.

Anders Thoresson

@atomicpoet @leslore Ah, didn’t connect the two threads. Thought you meant that self-hosting was a solution to this the storage issue.

Chris Trottier

@anders @leslore God no. Storage is the critical problem affecting self-hosting. It gets worse when you're dealing with audio, video, and photos.

But there are potential technological solutions.

Anders Thoresson

@atomicpoet Yea, I couldn’t see any reason why self-hosting was better in that regard.

That also explains another thing: I visited peerverse.space earlier and checked the about page. Couldn’t understand how 8 users could have posted well over 600k photos. But now I guess that’s the total of all photos hosted on your instance, not matter where they originated?

Anders Thoresson replied to Chris

@atomicpoet Crazy indeed. That’s close to 10x my private photo storage from 20 years as a hobby photographer.

But isn’t there any pruning of what’s stored locally?

@jeffmcneill @anders @atomicpoet

Yes, there are some good #IPFS enabled Fediverse servers. #Quanta and I believe #Mitra too, to name a couple.

And #Wasabi can provide an affordable storage soltion too, that is easy to implement:

I hope that helps!
