Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

Hello people of the Fediverse! Some of you may have heard that a new Mastodon client, Ivory,  is in development for iOS (and Mac!). This is true! Tapbots is going all in on Mastodon and we hope this place continues to grow and thrive. Tweetbot will continue to be developed alongside Ivory as a lot of code is shared. A new Mac version of Tweetbot and Ivory are also currently in development and we are working hard on getting those towards a public beta state.

@tbridge @Verso How on earth did I get in on the @ivory test before you two?

(First opinion: it's very cool, but it's also very early. It's missing some major features that they'll need to have before they ship.)

Tom Bridge

@thedorismith @Verso @ivory I love that you're on that beta!!! If you see any invites, I would gladly take one ;)

Dori Smith

@tbridge @Verso I shared the last time @ivory opened up more slots, but my understanding is that they closed it again pretty quickly due to the high level of interest.

If I hear it's open again, I'll def share it here.

@ivory @podfeet I’d be willing to pay an amount of money on a yearly cadence for this…the amount is probably higher than one might think it would be.

Jean-Francois Mezei

@ivory Thank you ! looking forward to a real client on the Mac, Make sure it works on 10.14 of OS-X (pretty please, I am begging :-)

Evan K. Stone

@ivory Really hoping this gets opened to more of us as time goes on. Heard really great things about it even if it's just in alpha. 👍🏻

Claude M. Schrader

@ivory I’m very excited for an actually good mastodon client

Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

@ivory will it have mastodon 4 features, like translation and editing posts? None of the current clients have that, that I have checked.

@ivory Just keep in mind, mastodon is growing BECAUSE Twitter is dying. The two don’t go well together. Ask Space Karen why. Anyway, glad of the new software for mastodon.👍

edgeoforever 🍎

@ivory P.S. lose the bird on top of mastodon. Two logos, far away from each other.

@ivory I've been using Tweetbot for ten years now, so I can't wait to get my hands on this!

hubertba

@ivory is there a way to come into TestFlight. I am a longtime Tweetbot user and I would love to have the same great experience with mastodon

AndiS 🌞🍷🇪🇺
Welche Funktionalität suchst du im speziellen? Weil Apps gibts schon eine Menge. Vielleicht is da schon was für dich dabei!

@ivory @hubertba

@ivory I cannot f-ing wait for this! The beta is full but I want it as soon as it comes out. Tweetbot was unparalleled.

Roman.

@ivory I'm hoping Android is going to also be ported eventually? Please 🥺

Ugo

@ivory this is amazing news guys, can’t wait!

David

@ivory opened Twitter to beg for a tapbot client and you’re way ahead of the game. 😀

Meg

@seanhealy feel like you might want to know about this if you don't already

ʎlɐǝɥuɐǝs

@megmac I just got into the beta and am loving it but thanks so much for sending it my way!

Meg

@seanhealy lol i thought i might be behind. This all reminds me of old times when there were a million Twitter clients all better than the official one and they killed most of them off for ad revenue

ʎlɐǝɥuɐǝs

@megmac yea! There is so much about Mastodon that reminds me of the golden age of Twitter. I’m really loving it.

The slow demise of third party Twitter apps was part of their product shifting in a way that really started my loosing enjoyment from their service. It felt less and less like a social tool I wanted to use and more like an algorithmically generated ad machine. Which I guess was exactly what it became.

Meg

@seanhealy i agree, though i think I've grown too cynical about "the social internet" in general to get the full hit of 2009 nostalgia lol.

Meg

@seanhealy i got in on this morning's key release and tbh it seems pretty limited so far :/ definitely doesn't seem ready to be a daily driver yet. Unless I'm missing something.

ʎlɐǝɥuɐǝs

@megmac I’m now using it combined with Toot! I find @ivory nicer for casually reading my feed but it is definitely missing some things still. Also, the one really little feature I’m missing from Toot! Is the lines above and below the Avatar indicating conversation and replies.

Adam

@ivory Will this project be release as open source?

Sergio Bruder

@ivory make us an Anybot: a single client for twitter and mastodon. *that* will sell.

Shelly Brisbin

@ivory A question: will Iviry be accessible to screen readers? Have you included blind and visually impaired Mastodon users in the beta? OK, that’s two questions! #a11y

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@ShellyBrisbin it will be at some point! We haven’t intentionally added any yet because we are focusing on getting to market asap. We are a small team and have a million things to do still! 🙂

Shelly Brisbin

@ivory That’s extremely disappointing, especially since other clients, and even the web interface, ,provide a measure of support for all users. For free. I hope you reconsider. I’ll continue to use and recommend accessible software. #a11y

Ken Scott

@ShellyBrisbin Mona is your friend. As are Metatext and Toot, somewhat. Tusker and Tooot! are also going that way. We don't need that guy.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@ShellyBrisbin we started building our app only a month ago. Other clients and the website have been out for much much longer. We will get there. 🙂

Jon McLaren

@ivory
The issue is if you don't build with accessibility in mind at the start you're going to build up a level of technical debt that will make it nearly require a rewrite to fix.

Much easier to build from the get-go even with a small team, and it can be a competitive advantage.

David Ciatto :pika:

@ivory @ShellyBrisbin FWIW Shelly I think they’re underselling what’s already working. They have custom VO actions on posts in the feed, and basic dynamic type support throughout. Seems on par with Tweetbot in most places.

David Goldfield

@ivory @ShellyBrisbin I am very disappointed knowing that I am being excluded just so that you can get your app to market sooner. This is very disheartening, so I will be using other apps where the developers are making accessibility a priority.

Ivory by Tapbots :emoji_wink:

@DavidGoldfield @ShellyBrisbin you aren’t being excluded. We spent a lot of time making Tweetbot accessible and have had great good about it. Ivory already has those underpinnings. But we are currently focusing on completely missing mastodon features at the moment.

Lynette

@ivory @ShellyBrisbin @DavidGoldfield I think it is possible to concentrate on both. If you design with #accessibility in mind from the ground up, you get feedback from disabled users throughout the building process. That feedback is just as valuable as what #Mastodon feature folks would like to see next. #Inclusion is important, #disabled people should not be an afterthought.

Noah Carver 👨🏼‍🦯

@Lynessence @ivory @ShellyBrisbin @DavidGoldfield Amen. It is much easier and more efficient to design accessibility into a product from the get-go than to insert it as an afterthought. Additionally, it's been my personal experience that apps in which accessibility was prioritized from the beginning have much better accessibility to begin with.

Shelly Brisbin

@ivory @DavidGoldfield the last time I checked out Tweetbot, it was inaccessible. So i’m glad to hear that’s changed. But that’s the peril of creating a product without accessibility and adding it later. You’ve already left the impression that accessibility isn’t important to you and people choose other apps.

[unowned RobWhitaker]

@ShellyBrisbin @ivory I love your apps and I really appreciate the work you’re doing. But this is a horrible response. It’s much easier to build accessibility in from the start than to try to add it later. Please don’t exclude people.
Accessibility is the ‘viable’ part of MVP.

Scott Willsey

@RobW If Paul is manning that account, you probably can consider yourself blocked. 😂

But I agree with you 100%

[unowned RobWhitaker]

@scottaw I honestly don’t want a pile on. Many people don’t realise accessibility from the start is easier and this is why they think it’s hard. I just hope that knowledge helps a little. I don’t expect for a second that Paul wants to make an inaccessible app.

Scott Willsey

@RobW Oh, no, I agree. That's why I removed them from my reply. Paul was super block happy on Twitter though. He blocked me and I don't remember ever interacting with him.

[unowned RobWhitaker]

@scottaw that’s a real shame. Although I do understand why criticism can be difficult for a one person shop.

Bynkii (they/them)

@RobW @ShellyBrisbin @ivory so a “feature” that to work well has to be a part of everything in the UI/UX and can require significant code changes to account for is going to be bolted on? “Later”?

When? 1.1? 1.2? 5.X? 10.X?

Why, in 2022, would you say “we only want people with no disabilities to use our app until we “get around” to treating them like viable customers?”

Regardless of intent, that is what that decision says and does.

Mi Go (teno)

@ivory hey @ivory! Curious what the minimum iOS version you’re testing your Alpha on.

My beloved iPhone won’t update beyond 15.7.2, but I do have a newer iPad.

James Musson 🔴

@ivory Could you say any more about the Mac version at this stage? Might there be a built to test ;)

José Luis Rodríguez Suárez

@ivory espero que pronto se publique la app. Saludos desde 🇨🇴

@ivory I don’t suppose my current subscription would be shared as well?
