Imagine you could install any software on any device. The devices you own that don't receive updates anymore, or where you found out that the software is full of ads/tracking. You could replace it, maybe with a Linux distro like postmarketOS running mainline. These devices wouldn't need to be electronic waste. We signed @fsfe's #openletter to the EU to make this happen.

You can sign it, too!

@postmarketOS @fsfe let’s start with phones and routers. we use these devices in our homes everyday!

@postmarketOS @fsfe so it is mandatory to have your name published on the site when signing? Cannot sign without having that "optional" box checked. Yet the linked list has just 2 entries. So I wonder how the others signed it without being listed.

Seeing the list of organizations having signed somehow doesn't make it plausible there were only 2 individuals signing it in the same period. So what's wrong here?

Screenshot of the page code showing the box to "wish to be listed on-site" is set to mandatory ("required")
Screenshot showing the "complete list" of signers (names sanitized)

@IzzyOnDroid @postmarketOS @fsfe@media.fsfe.org we are sorry for the bug and any inconvenience, it should be fixed now, can you please re-check?

the list is so small because until today only organisations have been able to sign the letter and the list is also only updated every 24 hours, so the list will be longer tomorrow : )

@fsfe@mastodon.social @postmarketOS @fsfe@media.fsfe.org I have to admit I simply manipulated the HTML (via inspector) to remove the mandatory flag before sending the form (which worked, so I've already signed).

Looking at the form now: yes, looks good – thanks!

@postmarketOS @fsfe I tried to sign, but I cannot be sure it was accepted - the confirmation button on the webpage reached viabthe confirmation link reported an error 'limit exceeded, only 20 requests per hour allowed' I certainly didn't clicked more than once

@postmarketOS @fsfe ngl would be neat if this was a citizen initiative instead of a letter with unverified signatures… but it's a start?

@postmarketOS @fsfe Also worth noting the EU page for implementing said policy if it opens for third round of feedback at some point:

ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-r

Not sure what the current "Commission adoption: Planned for Fourth quarter 2022" means in practice. Maybe @EU_Commission can elaborate?

@postmarketOS @fsfe @EU_Commission I'm personally very eager to unlock the bootloader of my #Nokia #HMDGlobal phone that is currently marked as "impossible" here:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootlo

Didn't know this impossibility at the point of purchase, I would have liked a mark indicating that on the box. The other Sony Xperia 10 III that I have bootloader unlocked doesn't compare well to the Nokia 8.3 5G.

@postmarketOS @fsfe @EU_Commission I'm Finnish and very proud of Nokia and HMD Global but I have wondered about their strong stance on #sustainability and #CircularEconomy in ads while simultaneously not allowing bootloader unlocking to extend the lifespan of the device.

Imagine, using your old phone as a Raspberry Pi-like computer.
Or as a Smart TV dongle.
Or flashing simple OS to make a dumb phone and give to your parents, use on camping.
Or just installing lighter version of OS like we have with Linux, instead of one-fit-all like Android.

I had to change my phone 3 times in the last 7 years and feel like my current phone is not going to last much. Meanwhile my computer is still running the same, even having 2x less RAM than phone, the only parts I changed was a fan and disk upgrade.

@postmarketOS @fsfe A real thing people forget: I want some older versions of software to stay around. Some of my sons favorite games, THAT I PAID FOR, are gone from the Apple ecosystem (so the minute you upgrade devices... it can't be installed) or aren't working on newer iOS, or the games changed so much as to not be what he wants to play (looking at you Lego Duplo game, grrrr).

@postmarketOS @fsfe I want to sign this but I don't know if it applies to me as I live in the #UnitedKingdom

Jennifer C J Radtke

@UltrasonicMadness @postmarketOS @fsfe I've signed it - United Kingdom is in the country list so I think we're okay

Oliver Smith

@UltrasonicMadness @postmarketOS @fsfe looks like you can, there is a country dropdown and it lists UK

Imagine that this device is not only a smartphone, a TV, but also a washing machine, a fridge, a car, an autonomous driving truck, an autonomous flying cab, ...

Imagine there will be competition at the interface between hardware and software: No more walled gardens. No more "golden" cages: you sovereignly decide the operating system of your property: you decide who should have control over your property.

Fewer #bugs, less #fraud, no more #bugdoor s and no more #backdoos.

@postmarketOS @fsfe FSFE: we're several people who want to sign but just like @tomterl when we click to confirm, we're getting the 'limit exceeded, 20 requests...' error, and then "Not Found No such pending confirmation ID".

Could you please fix this and inform us when it is done? I would like to share this more broadly, and it'd be better if people were not met with an error message. Thanks!
