@stephenfry it really It reminds me of Twitter in early 2009. Back when it felt like everyone knew everyone and I learned some terrific ways to get my dog to take dog medicine, one of which even worked.

@ChrisPirillo @neilhimself @stephenfry I think @torstenkathke hit the nail on the head when he compared it to Usenet. @ChrisPirillo @neilhimself @stephenfry Reminds me a lot of Usenet, my introduction to the internet. Ah, alt.cyberpunk ❤️🔥 @doctormo @neilhimself @stephenfry There will be challenges and growing pains, but the advantage of a protocol-based, open, federated network is that many people can contribute to improving the clients, servers, and network itself (including specialized variants of all), which is not possible with proprietary systems controlled by a single company. @swetland @neilhimself @stephenfry Trying to find the words to invite computer users into taking greater responsibility over themselves, their work tools and their social networks has been a struggle. I'm always optimistic, but I know how much work it is to convince people to put more thoughtfulness into the precious things on their computers. @doctormo @neilhimself @stephenfry I thought this poll about age breakdown from @mcneely was interesting. If this is an accurate representation of Mastodon demographics then it explains why I feel at home here. @doctormo @neilhimself @stephenfry When Twitter changed from talking between people to instead talking to KFC or Burger King, and seeing ads of the same, it was the beginning of the end. Wendy's may come to Mastodon, but I hope it feels differently. @neilhimself @stephenfry I am enjoying the peacefulness of this platform so far. I like all the poetry that is shared on my instance! I think I missed a lot of that on Twitter because of all the other things being pushed. @neilhimself @stephenfry I hope we don't lose that as the platform grows. It will be sad day if this ends up a place we shout into the void, never really sure if anyone's listening. @neilhimself @stephenfry To me is a revival of the good old days when I had <200 friends in Facebook @nande @neilhimself @stephenfry Still surprises me that people have > 200 friends. How can anyone be friends with that many people? Surely they should have used the term acquaintances? @Pembroken @neilhimself @stephenfry They should have used the term "friends of my mother" 😆 @neilhimself @stephenfry Those were good days. It was quieter as well. Dear Stephen, you maintained nearly a one-to-one follow-back ratio with all your fans (we were more civilized there then) which was impressive! But then the masses flooded in. Letʼs hope the more collegial culture stays intact here. @neilhimself @stephenfry Don’t know if this is going to be the next place, but it’s “felt” like it’s going to be since the journa.host instance launched and reporters started posting. Glad you’re here. @neilhimself @stephenfry I’m assuming the dog + medicine playbook included peanut butter….Guaranteed never to be regurgitated. @annethorpe @neilhimself @stephenfry be careful that your brand of peanut butter doesn't contain xylitol which is toxic to dogs and can be fatal. @annethorpe @stephenfry I tried dozens of methods, and wrapping them in cold butter was the best for my dog. Hot dogs and peanut butter were both consumed and then the pill spat out. @neilhimself @stephenfry trying to fathom it all out. Seems similar, but much smaller pool. @neilhimself @stephenfry Now let’s just hope our mass exodus over here doesn’t break things!! 🫣 |
@neilhimself @stephenfry ...or, the way the internet / community used to be before we were dominated by centralized "social media" platforms. Feels similar to BBSes, USENET.
