@doctormo @neilhimself @stephenfry There will be challenges and growing pains, but the advantage of a protocol-based, open, federated network is that many people can contribute to improving the clients, servers, and network itself (including specialized variants of all), which is not possible with proprietary systems controlled by a single company.

Trying to find the words to invite computer users into taking greater responsibility over themselves, their work tools and their social networks has been a struggle. I'm always optimistic, but I know how much work it is to convince people to put more thoughtfulness into the precious things on their computers.
