Something I must make clear:

If you want to see posts from different instances, they must be federated. This means:

1. If one instance has never made contact with another, accounts from the remote instance can't be followed
2. If one instance de-federates with another instance, account from the remote instance will no longer be followed
3. For a myriad of reasons, federation might be disrupted

@atomicpoet can you define “made contact “ in point 1 please. Is this administrative or user determined?

@atomicpoet I’ve noticed that I can’t view followers or following for some users, I guess this is because those accounts I can’t see are on instances that are not federated with the one I’m on?

@atomicpoet I'm considering making my own instance. If I do, does that mean I won't be able to follow others, or others won't be able to follow me?

@reneeclark People will be able to follow you if you enable federation. It *should* be a matter of entering your username address into search.

I have four instances that I run, and they all have no problems following accounts elsewhere or being following remotely.
