@palafo @nytimes unfortunately it wants me to login just to read it. Glad to see that there is some press about it though.

Paul Chambers

@palafo @krebstar @nytimes I logged in and it wants a subscription.

There is no way to get rid of the subscribe request.

Maybe it is because I previously had a subscription.

Patrick LaForge

@FeedingTubePaul Did you use the right link? It should be showing it was gifted by a NYT subscriber. I'll mention to tech support folks. I am not tech support.

Paul Chambers

@palafo I logged out and registered with a new email account as a new account and got it.

Thanks for the gift article.

@nytimes @krebstar @FeedingTubePaul @palafo if you’re on an iPhone, you can select *Show Reader* on the Safari browser. I was able to read it without signing up that way.

SugarZulu79

@krebstar @palafo don't click the thumbnail. Click the link at the end of the tweet. It will say Subscriber shared article. And you can skip the login. Hth!

Charles J Gervasi ⚡🛡️🥥

@palafo @nytimes I liked this article. The first part got me curious what Musk wrote and deleted, but that is truly unimportant. Decentralized social media could be huge.

Charles J Gervasi ⚡🛡️🥥

@mjk_4mjk @palafo This satiated my morbid curiosity, my unhealthy urge to stare at someone who's psychologically melting down in public.
My schadenfreude is partly caused by my being disappointed. I thought he might find a way to use blockchain or something to decentralize social media, but it looks like @Gargron is beating him at that.
Thank you for posting the screenshot.

@cgervasi @palafo @nytimes Musk is a member of the self-proclaimed family values party (Republican).

Charles J Gervasi ⚡🛡️🥥

@mjk_4mjk @palafo Republicans have become the party of people feel aggrieved or bullied and now have a desire to hurt someone, anyone, else.

0xZogG

@mjk_4mjk @cgervasi @palafo @nytimes funny he jokes like he is the one who coded twitter and not the one who just bought for overpriced value and ruining it :welp:

#VOTED-SolidarityWithUkraine 🌻

@cgervasi @palafo @nytimes

Why is he freaking out? It’s hard to compete with the idea of what Mastodon is. It’s why Jack is building something similar. Brands could join but not have any paid ads and their contributions would have to fit within the server guidelines. No paid ads; it’s an adventure in user donated communities. It would sure drive the value of TWT into the ground. We’ll see.

Dennis Jernberg

@palafo @nytimes I say it's a very good thing that Mastodon and the Fediverse are finally getting serious mainstream coverage, even if Musk setting fire to Twitter was the necessary prerequisite.

Nathan Rubin

@dennis_jernberg @palafo @nytimes also a little bit of Streisand effect. Musk insulting mastodon was ultimately what led me to look it up 🤷‍♂️

AssInNine

@palafo @nytimes Thank you! That made things less confusing.

@palafo @nytimes

This is an excellent piece. Highly recommended.🏆

ianhillmedia

@nytimes @palafo Another reason to like Metatext: clicking the link redirected me to the NYT app, where I’m always logged into my subscription; the Twitter app takes me to that app’s web browser experience.

Proxfox Virtual Environment 🦊

@ianhillmedia @nytimes @palafo it's annoying that the embedded type browsers can't link to apps, as opposed to opening straight Safari, but companies like twitter will try as hard to make you never leave their app

Patrick LaForge

@nytimes @ianhillmedia Yes, I am constantly having to log in on many apps that handle links that way

Thomas_katt

I have that problem with facebook. Twitter goes directly to chrome, where I'm signed in where I can be, or the app if I got it 😊

@ianhillmedia @nytimes @palafo

Lily Ray 😏

@palafo @nytimes 3 times! The immaturity and lack of self restraint are astounding for someone in his position.

Till Sawala

@LilyRay @palafo @nytimes On the other hand, it's only someone in his position who gets away with being this immature and unfiltered.

Denny

@palafo @nytimes Still seems to be behind a login page though.

Bathsheba Blue

@denny @palafo @nytimes just click on the down area as indicated and it goes away.

Tabitha Hope

@inklings @denny @palafo @nytimes one dirty trick I use to bypass paywalls is the Pocket app—works most of the time!

Bathsheba Blue

@thistabithahope @denny @palafo @nytimes hey thanks for the tip!

Got one for you too: If you set your default to reader view for docs on Twitter it frequently bypasses paywalls.

Aswin

@palafo @nytimes I'm just loving the fact how tech-aware and nerdy the whole world is getting because of Twitter dumpster fire. If I told anyone the word "instance", they'd laugh at my face. Now, they know exactly what I mean! Crazy and beautiful!

jesuiSatire …ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ

@palafo @nytimes

Where are the screens, I mean this is the internets, we need some none fungible copy of these trophy's!

Schroeder

@palafo @nytimes
Today is for the US election. Tomorrow I'll use my last few days on Twitter insulting Musk and promoting Mastodon.

Dulce Maria

@palafo @nytimes curious what did his deleted tweets day about Mastodon?

secretsloth (she/they)

@palafo @nytimes thank you very much! So glad this is getting so much media coverage, that's how I knew Mastodon existed at all - I've avoided all social media (except tumblr) for years because of all the privacy issues and harassment. I hope others like me will be able to find this amazing online home, whether they are fleeing birdsite or just ugliness in general. :BirdyHeart:

Mike Stevens :ohno:

@palafo @nytimes jeez, the comments on that article are really something. I'd assumed NYT readers were a bit brighter, but... :ohno:

Patrick LaForge

@mikestevens Yeah, so it goes. Some people comment without reading. If you filter by readers picks it tends to better. I don't see any NYT moderator picks on that one.

Bruce

@palafo @nytimes
Which is not a how-to-use-it article but more a what-it-is article that includes some pointers on establishing your very own server. I think I already have a good idea about what it is. Better how-to-use-its would be more helpful for me. ;)

Le Pendu

@palafo @nytimes my antisocial, anti social partner wants to sign up, floored me!

edgeoforever 🍎

@palafo @nytimes The article omits the important fact that once Gab showed its colors it was de-federated (isolated) by all other servers. Seems relevant.🤷‍♀️

Patrick LaForge

@edgeoforever@mastodon.worlFrom article: "For example, when Gab used Mastodon’s code, Mastodon Social and other independent servers blocked Gab’s server, so posts from Gab did not appear on the feeds of people using those servers." Non-technical language but in there.

@palafo @nytimes thank you this was an interesting read

teresaberkowitz

@palafo @nytimes thank you for posting this. I mean tooting this!

The hardest part for me was getting through the sign up. Now I am enjoying mastedon.

Patrick LaForge

@meshaiman Might just be a registration wall. It's also possible those gift links expire after a time. Not sure.

shepdave

@palafo @nytimes
The comments on that article (now closed) are so funny. People are ranting about "echo chambers" and decrying social networks while participating in an echo chamber/social network: namely, the comment thread on a NY Times article.

Patrick LaForge

@davewordnerd Haha, fair. This is what Musk fans have been saying in my Twitter mentions as well, but Twitter Blue is entirely about letting power users to set up follower-only echo chambers with circles and other features

shepdave

@palafo
We’ll, quite apart from the “echo chamber “ critique, a lot of folks were saying things like “get off the internet” and “read a book.” If comments were still open, I might’ve said “stay off the comment threads.”

AdammG

@palafo @nytimes Nice to know we’re already taking up space rent-free in musk’s brain….

Persister

@palafo @nytimes great article, thanks for sharing. My favorite line, by far: ‘On Monday, Mr. Musk, 51, tweeted at least three derogatory comments about Mastodon before deleting the posts.’ Musk has no idea what he’s gotten himself in to, does he😁

Matt Noyes

@palafo @nytimes The article is one of the most concise and accurate descriptions, so far. Leaves out the cooperative and collective instances, the global character (biggest instances are in Japan, no?), the queer history, the larger stakes of de-googlizing the internet, but still not bad. The comments, though are a riot! So much hostility to social media.

Erika

@palafo are there any screenshots of those deleted tweets? I wanna laugh at the clown

MBybee

@palafo @nytimes I was initially like "oh man, what am I going to see here", but this was a pretty well put together article!
Well done NYT.

Twitter_expat ✅(Fedi Resident)

@palafo @nytimes thanks for the info. Now I know more about this platform. It’s a very interesting concept and what I like the most is the decentralization.

bob :fediverse:

@palafo @nytimes Patrick, please pass on my thanks for this concise and fair summary, and thank you for sharing it for free!

Wax311991

@palafo @nytimes A paywall for Twitter 🤣 he really wants his money back! 🤣

Rob Cinos

@palafo @nytimes The Fediverse is a real threat to technocrats who want that traffic and data for themselves. OUR traffic and data!

@palafo @nytimes Holy tracking cookies batman! This thing looks like it will eat my soul and then my browser...
Daniel

@palafo Ha - surprised no one has snagged that name yet on my instance. How’s it going in your neck of the woods?

Daniel

@palafo have actually been on here for a little while - just on a different instance. Mostly lurk these days.

Patrick LaForge

@npettiaux @nytimes @nytimes@news.twtr.plus Neither account was started by us, but we are investigating ways to reach audience here

Nicolas Pettiaux

@palafo @nytimes when will nytimes have its own #mastodon and #peertube servers to be as much independant from Google and Microsoft as possible ?

Patrick LaForge

@npettiaux @nytimes That is not up to me. Typically, if we engage with a new audience on a new platform, we do not sever other arrangements.

Nicolas Pettiaux

@palafo @nytimes having a mastodon server for your own journalists and small communities would not engage anyone. Just help us recognize you, the journalists and teams of NYtimes

Patrick LaForge

@npettiaux First the decision makers would need to be persuaded there is a reason to be here and recognizable. It is not my decision, in any case. I am here as a hobbyist and a curious person, not a representative of my employer. You would have to ask my employer about this if you wish to … engage…
