One thing that's blowing my mind is how many great organizations host Mastodon instances on their main domain. mastodon.mit.edu? social.kernel.org? Very cool!

@evan Apparently the MIT one was set up by students ages ago and is now neglected.

@evan And the German government. And already so many cities over here... they've been running for a while, some of them. Just shyly under cover ... :-)

@evan Time for mastodon.identi.ca? πŸ˜‰

Evan Prodromou

@CyruxiME Nope. But I hope to get identi.ca upgraded and using ActivityPub sometime in the first half of 2023.

@evan it's like the Web has been under the spell this whole time, which finally broke, and the Internet is relearning how to be the Internet again.

@drq @evan
Not so sure, but at least we're probably going in the right direction.
Omly time will tell. Some time ago we had XMPP everywhere, but something went wrong.

@skobkin @drq I'd highly recommend Tim Wu's book "The Master Switch", which covers centralization and decentralization trends in many different media, from telegraph, radio, film, TV and cable TV to the Internet.

@evan Impressive, but many organizations will not want to take this on due to potential legal liabilities. #MIT has $$$ for legal defense; many do not.

@olyerickson @evan the #MIT instance is hosted by students and is separate from the MIT administration. it's as affiliated with the institute as anyone's personal website on the mit domain.

@cuddlefish @evan Again, not all institutions are as lenient as MIT with what is published under their domains. Some manage them very carefully, both legally, technically and w.r.t. their β€œbrand.”

@olyerickson Legal liabilities...

You know, back in my day universities and organizations ran their own websites and forums and blogs and hosted their own E-mail servers. Legal liabilities for what? For running a website for your organization? Fediverse, after all, is just websites talking to each other, that's it. How deeply poisoned and scared have we become?

@drq @evan In the US, under CDA Section 230 an institution _ought_ to be protected from legal concerns; it _ought_ to be treated as a β€œservice provider.” But that really comes down to how confident the institution’s lawyers are… eff.org/issues/cda230
