I keep hearing that #Mastodon is not likely to replace #Twitter. To that I say: so what?
I've been contributing to the #Linux desktop for the last 15 years not because it's likely to replace #Windows, but because providing people with free desktop is the right thing to do.
I use and support Mastodon not because it's likely to replace Twitter, but because it's a social network done right.

This quote by Václav Havel is quite fitting: "Hope is a state of mind, not of the world. Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good."

@sesivany Mastadon is unlikely to replace twitter for a number of reasons - but the two biggest I see are that there's no obvious advertising model for corporations to buy into and the lack of structural elements that encourage people to try to go viral regardless of whether its for positive or negative reasons.

Since both of these things are reasons why I left Twitter for my mental health a while ago, I'm not sad if they're not replicated here tho.

@Jer @sesivany on Twitter there were some key accounts I followed for news and insight, and many are also here now. I've been back a handful of times without engaging and will stop soon.

I don't think I'm alone - and for all its users, for me 95% of twitter's draw was a very small number of accounts. If those quality accounts leave, twitter will surely wither and likely enter a death spiral, where eventually advertising revenue projections don't support costs.

@sesivany Yep yep -- this is precisely right

Mastodon serves different needs than Twitter, just as Linux serves different needs than other OSes

I actively bounce between machines running MacOS, Windows and Linux, and between various online social spheres

@sesivany Regardless of whether or not it will ever replace Twitter, it's sometimes a good idea to just explore and try something new altogether. That step alone is what had me posting art.

Marisa Ponti

@sesivany, I think it's the lock-in effect we are having, the feeling we cannot move to another social network without substantial inconvenience.

@sesivany Thank you for your work on desktop Linux. I have been using Linux on the desktop since 2003.

W Millard

@sesivany it’s very much like Linux. My experience so far is that of trying to record Netflix onto a Betamax to avoid connecting your tv to the internet

SinisterBulb

@sesivany It isnt likely to replace Twitter for brands and marketers. But it just might for actual people. Quite simply because the balance has shifted. Mastodon has stayed where it is. Twitter’s usp has arguably now been broken from the perspective of a user. This is my second ‘go’ here. I think i’ll stay. Its nice.

Jill

@sesivany I agree 100%. Twitter has become some twisted place in many respects, however, from what I have seen so far of Mastodon - this place is anything but and although I am a newbie and don't know my way around much, I really like it here.

Jon Cutting

@sesivany I've used Linux on the desktop for 15 years. A big thank you for your contributions! (Also please can you fix that annoying bug where.. just kidding 😉)

The Liberal & Radical Echo

@sesivany This level of positive vibes is what I need.

Happy weekend!

@sesivany It's fascinating that, to some, dominance is the only measure of success.

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@nigel @sesivany It's engraved in our culture, every kid is getting told in school that competition is life's core. It's a pedagogical catastrophe.

Nigel Small

@Natanox @sesivany It's beyond schools, I think. Engraved in culture, as you say.

Here in the UK, many people chase all the trappings of great wealth, yet also denigrate anyone who has achieved such wealth. Like everyone has ambition to turn into someone they hate.

It's peculiar and disturbing. But has been going on for years and years.

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@nigel @sesivany Schools are a central part of proliferating culture, ain't they? Especially given we've successfully taken away as much parental time as possible to feed the economics machine.

Fuzzbizz

@sesivany I use desktop linux and feel lost on windows, constrained on Mac. Thanks!

Martin Vermeer FCD

@sesivany Also, a bit of competition keeps the big guys on their toes. Windows would be awful without Linux/Mac competition.

@martinvermeer @sesivany windows seems to have decided to copy the others. So much for telling my wife to opt for a windows machine from work because it's what she's used to!

h4890

@sesivany

It already has replaced twitter for 100s of thousands if not millions of people.

Just like the linux desktop has completely replaced the windows desktops for 100s of thousands of people.

But neither linux nor mastodon will ever replace 100% of twitter because people have different needs and use cases.

My opinion is that this is as it should be, because monocultures are harmful.

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@h4890 @sesivany It really ain't about different needs if you ask me, but about marketing and people not knowing better.

@sesivany
Because we may be at another point like when Netscape open-sourced their browser, changing the dynamics of the browser market and reinforcing the position of open standards and Free software at the heart of the web.

200 million users may soon be looking for their new home. There will be many “lock-in” contenders for that position.

If Mastodon is seen as a good choice by enough people, it has the chance to change how *everyone* uses—and thinks about—social media.

@sesivany @mxtthxw Thanks for the CC ^^ and thank you sesivany for contributing to the Linux ecosystem!

@ignis

I think that was a Fedilab accident but I'm glad you found it useful! :hackett:

@sesivany Could't agree more. What makes it good is precisely what it is 😉 Not to mention the whole concept of the #Fediverse.

Arale Xan🎗️

@sesivany I hope it never does, or I'll have to leave Mastdon the same way I left Twitter years ago.

Many Colors, Maybe Moving…

(boost thread)

Stevan

@sesivany Yes, this. Few seem to question the ideological construct of there having to be "losers" and "winners", when the sandbox can be full of people enjoying their own games.
May Mastodon and Free Software never feel the need to "win".

Jose Garcia

@sesivany

There's a lot of social media professionals (not just engineers but all sorts) who suddenly have their wheels up.

The thing about people with their wheels up is they tend to surprise you with what they do next.

thomaswedel

@sesivany good statement. I‘ve been using Linux on my private computers for more than 15 years now, thus minimizing the Microsoft footprint in my personal environment. Mastodon gives
me a similar opportunity in terms of social media.

3 Squirrels In A Coat

@sesivany People are still using Windows?!?? *Shudder* Gross!

Robin Metcalfe 🍪

@sesivany It’s a good analogy but also imagine if Windows started to get significantly worse over time. Despite criticisms it’s still currently a very capable OS - but imagine if that changed, I’d assume many people currently on the fence would start to consider Linux more seriously, myself included

(edit: not meaning Linux isn't a serious OS, it absolutely is. Rather I'd consider it seriously for my own use cases)

Steve Parrington

@sesivany I am a person who has tooted this and what I've found after hanging out here for a bit is that I actually enjoy #mastodon so much more. It's just so much less stressful. I understand the existing community's anxieties around the birdsite exodus. I hope the total numbers end up being manageable.

katherine montalto

@sesivany wanting to find more information and community on open source software is how I found my way to mastodon in the first place.
