For years I had such a hard time explaining to *anyone* why this ActivityPub spec we were working so hard on mattered

When you think about it Elon paid 44 billion just to advertise the importance of the fediverse, gotta give that guy some credit, real generous of him

@cwebber Oh my gosh, thank you so much for your work

@cwebber heh, I've been reading the spec vocabs tonight whilst I implement a tool to convert my Twitter archive to ActivityPub structured data.

Still not sure how to structure the indexing — thinking a collection per day / month / year with references to subsets (though I might be thinking wrong)

Daniel Schildt

@thisismissem Really good idea about the data conversion tool. Sounds better approach compared to a static archives of a past Twitter posts. It would enable those posts to stay interactive part of future conversations.

@cwebber

I bet you could do awesome things with even 44 million dollars.

@emacsomancer @cwebber

I made an argument that Elon is has fallen victim to the dictator trap.

The Atlantic was describing it for Putin, but it works well for how twitter is burning.

@cwebber well, the banks have given him some credit. $44 billion USD.

he certainly didn't buy twitter from his own money.

imagine that, hah!

@cwebber no as far as I'm always a supporter of these interconnecting indie social medias, i still believed activity pub is a crap protocol where it dies nothing better than RSS/mail combo. Even mastodon impelemntation doesn't follow the protocol exactly.

Michael Hall

@chengdulittlea @cwebber you could have just scrolled on and not said anything. Why choose negativity?

@mhall119 @cwebber idk... I'm sorry about that. It's just this very protocol has been a constant headache to work with in development 😔

Maybe situation can get better when more libraries and stuff are around when more people using it and fix some inconsistency in the future. I'm looking forward to it but yeah... You got the idea

@cwebber :D

Well said, looking at events from different viewpoints can bring some fun :)

DELETED

@cwebber I'm literally reading a 2-year old HN thread right now and lo and behold here you are patiently, kindly, generously, and painstakingly responding in depth to people being pretty rude with what could have been valid (and kind) critique of what is necessarily an ambitious enterprise.

@cwebber And most of that is debt, so he literally took out a loan to raise ActivityPub awareness.

Strypey

The true believers were always behind you @cwebber . I remember in the early days of the net trying to convince *anyone* that it could be a useful tool for activists. Now you can't get them off the damn thing;) Someone has got to be first...

Jonathan Lamothe
I remember seeing someone post something along the lines of: I was skeptical about him at first, but Elon's shown that he can take a social network and make it wildly successful... Mastodon.

@cwebber It’s so exciting to see this take off! You get tons of credit for sticking to it & getting #ActivityPub out the door way back in the day when few others saw the vision. A warm hug to you! #SocialWebWG #W3CSpecification

Christine Lemmer-Webber

@Annbass Thank YOU for all the kindness and support you gave during the spec authorship... and after! You're an unsung hero of the W3C :)

BenBen

@Annbass @cwebber I love the open and free Internet for such moments… And all the people contributing to it! <3

Annbass

@BenBen @cwebber It’s thrilling. Reminds me of the earliest days of the web. Everyone floundering around, exploring, helping each other out.

BenBen

@Annbass @cwebber Maybe we should simply revive the old underconstruction.gif and restart from there… :)

Annbass

@cwebber PS. I love the concept that Elon paid $44B to promote an alternative. Hahaha

tech? no! man, see...

@cwebber I remember when we were waiting for the bus at RacketCon 2019 and you were trying to explain to me how Spritely addressed the shortcomings of the Fediverse and I could hear the gears in my head turning trying to grasp it but it was difficult and I really only kinda got half of what you were saying

now I'm on the other side of those conversations! it's tricky, especially when talking to people who have only known corporate networks

but on the other hand, explaining why user-empowering social networking in general is important has gotten a lot easier!

@technomancy @cwebber Reminds me of cwebber trying to explain object capabilities to the folks at APConf 2019, something that took me a while to grasp.

And it grew on me and nowadays I'm like "Aaah, I want more capability-based security systems (not always object kind), specially at the OS-level, it's great for least-privilege".
KryptykPhysh

@technomancy @cwebber I'll confess, I also find it a bit amusing that there's some wailing and gnashing of teeth from some folks who seem to regard social networks as some sort of competitive sport.

Relax, guys. Kick back. Sit a spell. ☺️
