What are the best open content games in the world today?

#gpl or #creativeCommons or other open source or open content stuff.

I'm looking for games that have been under active development for 15 years, and games that are Brand New. I want things that are fun to play or beautiful to look at, and that treat linux with First Class support.

What's out there?

@ajroach42 the best place to look is the games section of Flathub.

You don't have to install them all from there (I don't!), but it provides a surprisingly broad cross-section. 🙂

@TrechNex Thanks for the recommendation. I'm looking for reports from personal experience, but I can try some stuff out.

@ajroach42 it's a bit "rough and ready", but here's a list you might find interesting!

@ajroach42 These are analog rather than video games, but here are my favorite CC-licensed TTRPGs:
- Tunnel Goons
- Forged in the Dark
- Liminal Horror

Eat My Wings To Keep Me Tame

@ajroach42 the MC modding scene is pretty good with being open source, and theres that 0AD strategy game i see in my package manager all the time. If u come across something cool and actually has a playerbase lmk

@redlilrascal @ajroach42 Minetest for that it's far better than MC. You have this for example: https://content.minetest.net/packages/Warr1024/nodecore/

Another good ones are Retux https://retux-game.github.io/ (Wariolike mechanics) and Hexoshi (Metroid clone) https://github.com/hexoshi/hexoshi

@ajroach42 0 A.D. is one of my personal favorites, along with Veloren. The latter is still in development so there's not much story yet, but the design is amazing so far.

@ajroach42 @ajroach42 love this. I've been tempted to start a side YT channel covering amateur game development - game jams, RPGMaker/Ren'Py/Twine hobbyist communities, etc.

As much as I love doing the retrogaming content I can't help but feel it'd be more helpful to highlight indie projects than defunct commercial products.

@ajroach42 um... does unrealworld.fi/ count?

It's been in development since 1992, and, well, um... it's a roguelike, and it's very Finnish (: So "fun to play" may be one of those things like "dysentry" and Oregon trail (:

It is not, however, open source. But I think, if you're not familiar with it, that it may fit what you were thinking of...

Andrew (R.S Admin)

@mjd My only real requirement is an open content license.

A closed source game is okay if the binaries can explicitly be freely redistributed, but I'd prefer something that allows modification.

@ajroach42

Such as modding, or?

I mean, I'd just write the guys and ask them. Honestly, I think this is the sort of thing you're actually looking for - something someone's spent a lot of time working on (it is their job - this odd little game about living in Finland around the ice age, or after...)

Andrew (R.S Admin)

@mjd I am explicitly looking for open content stuff at the moment, to talk about open content, as part of a #diymedia thing.

This game looks neat, but it probably isn't useful for this particular project.

Lohikäärme 32 :amiga:

@ajroach42 ah, right, this is a project thing where you need examples from that area.
Hmm...

tic80 ? (:

No, that hasn't been in development for that long.

There are loads of roguelikes and items people have already mentioned, I'm trying to think outside of those.

@ajroach42

You know about Nethack, right?

There's also ULarn, which is not really developed anymore but is actively maintained by @joshbressers . Code is at github.com/ularn/ularn

(I maintain a fork called ReLarn, which may or may not count.)

@ajroach42 Emilia Pinball (sudo apt install pinball) began in 2000 and saw major releases in (iirc) 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2020. It's so nice but I want more tables. Of the current tables, Gnu is my favorite.

@ajroach42 I'm a big fan of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. It's GPL and people have played it for years and still get a lot out of it.
