I'm here. It's me. Magic!
The (green-ticked) Neil Gaiman
@neilhimself @neilhimself Oh my goodness gracious it's Neil Gaiman. Two things 1 - thank you. just. for everything. for fragile things and smoke and mirrors and neverwhere and stardust and sandman and look just thank you for EVERYTHING. 2 - Please read number one again 3 (I lied, there are three) - If you're ever in south wales please pop in for a cup of tea and a chat. @neilhimself welcome! Great to have you here! Let us know if there's anything we can do for y'all. And thank you for Sandman's Dream Library. It is my favourite place. hello hello! I am glad to be able to follow you on here now as on tumblr and Twitter (especially if Twitter crashes and burns way seems it may do.) Also, Thanks again for being such a amazing creator Neil :3 I've been a fan since I was 13-14 and now 36 lol Sandman is what started it all for me in high school and I have read many other books of yours since. ♡ @neilhimself for whatever reason it took me 3 days to actually get mastodon to allow me to log in but I am here too. hurrah! @neilhimself Hello! It looks like I've had this account for a year but I've never posted or followed anyone. Let's see how this thing works. [kicks tires] @stephenfry @neilhimself Generally yes. It would be more fun if Neil hadn't boosted misinformation about the platform from someone speaking with an authority they don't hold. I was very disappointed to see that, I'd hoped we'd left 'popular accounts not fact checking things' before giving them air back on the bird. @UrsaAshBear He boosted a post about an AI here censoring a painting thumbnail. The most we can say about it is the image has been marked as "sensitive" and so the thumbnail shows as blurred. There may have been many reasons for it being marked so (someone reported it to an admin, an admin saw it, it contravened some server's rules and a request was made), but here AI is not the most likely answer and there is no way the original poster could know it is an AI that has done that. @UrsaAshBear Opening a discussion about AI's and their use, cool. Asking a question whether this was an AI that did it? Cool. Stating factually that an AI has censored a painting when you have no idea if that is the case. Not cool. @stephenfry @neilhimself It feels nice. Comforting in a way like my mother's shepherd's pie. The warm kind of familiarity that feels like the smell of fall, and the sound of a book being closed in the library. You know, the good stuff. Seems like the two of you brought Twitter into the limelight. So, let's see what happens with this thing... @stephenfry @neilhimself am I really the only other person who's going to toot back to this?! Toot being the proper term, mind you @evasandor @stephenfry @neilhimself @greg @stephenfry @neilhimself I had mixed feelings about it myself. "Toot" evoked the feeling that every comment I made had a faint but undeniable odor. Maybe they do. Sorry. @evasandor @stephenfry @neilhimself absolutely. I always thought toot was quite an apt analogy for posting on social media. I doubt a lot of image aware influencers feel the same way though. @stephenfry @neilhimself @stephenfry @neilhimself one of my favorite actors and one of my favorite authors in one place. #mastodon is just the best. Fiddler’s Green is a fantastic character made better by the incredible performance of @stephenfry . Absolutely beautiful adaptation of an incredible story. @stephenfry it really It reminds me of Twitter in early 2009. Back when it felt like everyone knew everyone and I learned some terrific ways to get my dog to take dog medicine, one of which even worked. @neilhimself @stephenfry ...or, the way the internet / community used to be before we were dominated by centralized "social media" platforms. Feels similar to BBSes, USENET. @ChrisPirillo @neilhimself @stephenfry I think @torstenkathke hit the nail on the head when he compared it to Usenet. @ChrisPirillo @neilhimself @stephenfry Reminds me a lot of Usenet, my introduction to the internet. Ah, alt.cyberpunk ❤️🔥 @doctormo @neilhimself @stephenfry There will be challenges and growing pains, but the advantage of a protocol-based, open, federated network is that many people can contribute to improving the clients, servers, and network itself (including specialized variants of all), which is not possible with proprietary systems controlled by a single company. @swetland @neilhimself @stephenfry Trying to find the words to invite computer users into taking greater responsibility over themselves, their work tools and their social networks has been a struggle. I'm always optimistic, but I know how much work it is to convince people to put more thoughtfulness into the precious things on their computers. @doctormo @neilhimself @stephenfry I thought this poll about age breakdown from @mcneely was interesting. If this is an accurate representation of Mastodon demographics then it explains why I feel at home here. @neilhimself @stephenfry I am enjoying the peacefulness of this platform so far. I like all the poetry that is shared on my instance! I think I missed a lot of that on Twitter because of all the other things being pushed. @neilhimself @stephenfry I hope we don't lose that as the platform grows. It will be sad day if this ends up a place we shout into the void, never really sure if anyone's listening. @neilhimself @stephenfry To me is a revival of the good old days when I had <200 friends in Facebook @nande @neilhimself @stephenfry Still surprises me that people have > 200 friends. How can anyone be friends with that many people? Surely they should have used the term acquaintances? @neilhimself @stephenfry Those were good days. It was quieter as well. Dear Stephen, you maintained nearly a one-to-one follow-back ratio with all your fans (we were more civilized there then) which was impressive! But then the masses flooded in. Letʼs hope the more collegial culture stays intact here. @neilhimself @stephenfry Don’t know if this is going to be the next place, but it’s “felt” like it’s going to be since the journa.host instance launched and reporters started posting. Glad you’re here. @neilhimself @stephenfry I’m assuming the dog + medicine playbook included peanut butter….Guaranteed never to be regurgitated. @annethorpe @neilhimself @stephenfry be careful that your brand of peanut butter doesn't contain xylitol which is toxic to dogs and can be fatal. @neilhimself @stephenfry trying to fathom it all out. Seems similar, but much smaller pool. @neilhimself @stephenfry Now let’s just hope our mass exodus over here doesn’t break things!! 🫣 @neilhimself thanks for the invite link on Twitter. Made finding this server much easier. @neilhimself the first person i’ve followed on Mastodon. how does this thing work lol @neilhimself I remember you coming to our office in Salisbury with Mr P. Ratchett and kicking myself for posting back a named airline ticket that he dropped on the floor, along with a fiver. It would be worth a fortune now! How we miss him and I bet you do, above all. @neilhimself I count your tweeted invite to Mastodon as my approved license to stalk you here too 😈 @neilhimself great to see you here Neil - still fondly remember the reading of a couple of chapters of American Gods you did in a daaark&dank pub in Oslo (in 2000 or 2001 iirc). Was too starstruck to chat with you after tho 😂 @neilhimself Hi Neil, thanks for the invite. Just setting up my profile and working out all the bells and whistles on this site 🙂 @neilhimself Thank you for the invite. My daughter has just started reading some of your work for her high school classes! She finds it fascinating and weird. :) |
