I don't think the SMS option was available outside of the US, at least at a sane cost, so I used services that allowed me to upload photos via email. No smartphone at the time, I had to do with what I had, and email was awesome for that!

SMS was available. I forgot when I did join twitter but it was around 2010. Since I had no permanent internet connection, I relied a lot on SMS notifications and posting.
