✨ Hello Fediverse!

If you haven't heard of Pixelfed before, it is the fediverse equivalent to Instagram.

Imagine being able to follow your friends on Twitter from your IG account, on the fediverse you can!

@karlggestd Yes. It is called 'Pixeldroid'. Not 100 % perfect yet, but on a good way. @pixelfed

@karlggestd @pixelfed yes, but you should download it from F-Droid, which is a different App Manager vs. Play Store, dedicated to open source apps.

@pixelfed I'm newish to the fediverse and now have accounts on both mastodon and pixelfed. I'm slightly confused about where best to post photos going forwards. Would it make sense to post photos on pixelfed and boost from my mastodon account? Rather than posting on both accounts?

EdenDestroyer (He/Him)

@andyburke @pixelfed thats what I used to do, post on my pixelfed and boost using mastodon. Getting the best of both worlds

Andy Burke

@edendestroyer @pixelfed thanks for that, I'll try it out. pixelfed certainly seems faster at displaying photos.

@andyburke @pixelfed currently most mastodon servers are experiencing latency due to huge migrations from twitter, everything will get fast with time. Currently the best idea would be making an account on smaller servers

Andy Burke

@edendestroyer I expect to move to a smaller server once I work out where to go!

@andyburke tip: if you desire not to keep your current account in the future, you can simply use the migration feature of mastodon from account settings.

@andyburke @pixelfed but yes, pixelfed is generally much faster at displaying photos, given the design philosophy

@andyburke @pixelfed it is more about what do you want to do. You can choose to use PixelFed as an app to modify your pictures and have a separated repository for them. Otherwise you can still use your mastodon profile, just you were uploading pictures on twitter 😄

@sleepingcreep @pixelfed thanks. Pixelfed certainly looks like it handles and curates images better. I think I just need to play a bit.

@andyburke @pixelfed I would suggest you add your accounts on both services (as in ”follow yourself”) and then I would post photos on Pixelfed (as that is what it is made for) and text-based posts on Mastodon (as that is what it is primarily made for) and then re-toot/re-share from the other account when suitable.

So you would then post a photo on Pixelfed, it comes up in your home stream on Mastodon where you re-share it. That way people also will see your ”other” account and can add it directly if they wish to do so.

@pixelfed is it for photos only? Or is it going to also accept other forms of art (eg digital paintings)?

Viny

That would be nice if we could share @pixelfed stories on our @Mastodon profile via a direct integration with both platforms, like the twitter fleets was + instagram stories combined

@pixelfed Hey, Pixelfed. I have a question. How would you explain the virtues of using a dedicated Pixelfed account over just posting photos/vids on your mastodon timeline? I was asked this question and I didn't have a good answer....

@pixelfed Hi, love the idea of this, have opened an account and have started learning about boosting Pixelfed posts on Mastodon. But ideally I'd love to import my Insta archive. Seems to be an option, but whenever I try it keeps failing. Is it still in beta, or are servers overwhelmed, or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
