@Gargron amazing! genuine question: how are you able to get these stats given the decentralised nature of mastodon? is there some centralised reporting across the whole fediverse to you?

Not sure exactly what Eugen is using, but the user counts are easily accessible via the API and it wouldn't be too hard to run a calculation for all the instances which federate with mastodon.social, which is most of them. Won't be (totally) complete, but I'm not sure Eugen is claiming that.

@carl @Gargron great answer, seems likely. was just wondering whether there was another channel / phone homing behaviour built in , which would be potentially problematic for privacy but useful for rolling our emergency updates etc

@emax @Gargron I was also wondering about this a lot. Is there some kind of telemetry sent to a central point?

@emax i believe i saw they have a bot scraping the stats from all the instances on instances.social, so it’s a lower bound.

@emax @Gargron Every instance knows how many users are registered and how many users have been active in the past X days *on that instance*.
And he probably runs a bot querying every instance mastodon.social is connected to and adding the numbers. So this is very certainly not complete, but it's good enough because you don't interact with people you don't know exist anyway.
