The official #PeerTube search index #SepiaSearch contains some nasty videos.

I don't think it's PeerTube's aim, it seems to just be a result of using blocklists rather than allowlists on their index. Blocklists place all the burden on random volunteers constantly checking for violations, whereas allowlists protect by default.

Would you be interested in using an alternative PeerTube search engine that is based on an allowlist?

p.s. This isn't an attack on PeerTube, I know they have very limited resources to handle all this. They have created an amazing video platform!

I'm just trying to find out if there is demand for an alternative index with tighter moderation.

@FediVideos doubt it. things are already obscure with algorithms being absent. as d understand, if there are items unwanted by a majority, they do not federate.

Silmathoron

@FediVideos peer.tube/ is an early step in that direction from @Framasoft

Otherwise there is also the PeerTubers wiki project, though it sorely lacks participants and is not a search engine.

Interesting! Didn't know about the peer.tube instance at all. Is there any info about it out there? The site itself just says "come back in 2023"...

I believe Framasoft just announced it today here :
framablog.org/2022/10/19/convi
(dedicated paragraph)

It is aimed (among other things) at promoting instances and videos they find worthwhile, as well as hosting some creators as of 2023.

We're glad you like this project, but the PeerTube ecosystem still **needs** an (several) allow list(s) maintained independently from us, by another community.

That is what decentralization is all about.

That's why we have just voted an enthusiast "Yes" to you poll.

Okay, thank you for the support! 🙏

I would like to help with this issue and if that can be done independently I'd be happy to do this!

PRECESS BY ILLIMINATION MUCH MORE VALUABLE.

using an allowlist.
perfect example of reverse engineering;)

@FediVideos think a tagging crusade would be effective? have curators label these videos for more focused filtering?

NixiИ

@FediVideos allowlist, blocklist is akin to censorship. does that mean one has to watch all of those videos to classify? if crowd tagging is engaged, could result in what cloud antivirus was decades ago that gave rise to virustotal.

wizzwizz4

@nergal @FediVideos Everything is akin to censorship.

• Not listing YouTube videos is censoring youtubers.
• Putting nasty videos in the search results denies access to people that excludes.
• Showing only videos that match the search query is censoring videos that don't match the search query.

A search engine is a tool. The question we should be asking is: would this make it a more useful tool? (We should also ask "what are the potential side-effects?", but pragmatically.)

wizzwizz4

@nergal @FediVideos Though crowd tagging sounds like a good idea! How would you envisage that working, and do you think you could make a little search engine that worked that way?

@FediVideos
I haven't tried Sepiasearch yet. So I couldn't have any valuable opinion now. But as far as I am concerned, a good search engine is necessary and i 'd rather let to any user his freedom and independence of choice.

@Nelfan

If you go to the PeerTube website and use the search there, that's Sepia Search: joinpeertube.org

Bitcrush.io

@FediVideos Just learning of this now from your poll, but I wonder if there would be any value to adding the equivalent of 'Safe Search' to sepia? Like, a setting that toggles between content results from an Allowlist or content results from everywhere.

@FediVideos I have tried to find "nasty stuff" and find it difficult. Not so much maybe what is being talked about here. I am sure that there's stuff that I keep finding on YouTube which makes a big point of being "not allowed on YouTube."

That said, I also have found it is getting easier and easier, to find "dangerous misinformation" type stuff on PeerTube, without even searching.
