went to a talk about shaders and GLSL at #f0rthsp4ce tonight in #tbilisi and ran into some people afterwards who had tried out the fediverse for a while last year but got annoyed with it cause they couldn't figure out how to find content that was interesting to them, when I told them I would give them a little tour sometime they all seemed excited by the idea

I think we have a lot to figure out. and the people who this place works for are a very special subset of humans that the chaos of this place makes sense to. not to say any other place has a model that is good but I really feel like the fediverse is the start of something really important and I want to do all I can to push whats good about it forward and to release the things that are not helping us. I think the name is one of the first things that needs work tho.

the name "fediverse" really doesnt work well in multi lingual settings and mastodon works but only for mastodon and then you loose much of the reason that this place is important going forward.

@liaizon I like to also call it the "open social web", but pretty much any alternative name I can think of is longer and clunkier than the sweet and short, 4-character term "fedi". A difficult problem to solve indeed. Naming always is.

@raucao thats pretty good actually, just to talk about the whole ecosystem of alternative infrastructure that is in the commons. as an introduction to it that's probably a better place to start then the fediverse anyway

@liaizon 3 syllables is just too long. People also say "insta" when they refer to Instagram for example. Facebook only has 2 syllables, which is why they don't need a shorthand in daily conversation. But basically all popular names don't exceed 2 syllables.

This is also why the term XMPP is so much worse than saying Jabber, when used in conversation.
