@alternative_be (I mean not to be a stickler but the people who aren't here very often probably won't be represented in the sample...)

alternative_beβœ…πŸ––πŸ»

@greatlevi Yes, that’s true. It’s not possible to run a poll for more than 7 days.

Billy Smith

@alternative_be @greatlevi

Run the week-long poll every week for a few months. :D

alternative_beβœ…πŸ––πŸ»

@BillySmith @greatlevi Things are getting crazy as it is. I never expected so many responders.

@alternative_be
You can renormalize by the probability of each group being online for the period of 1week. That way you can have an estimation of everybody even the ones not locked-in.
For example for the one week period group you will have these people having a 50% chance (I think, I have to actually do the math to be sure) to seen your post therefore you devide their number by 50% which is the same with multiplying by 2.

@alternative_be πŸ€” maybe you could compensate for it by running the poll for one day, and saying "are you a) here every day, b) 1/7 days, or c) 1/30 days" and then you would multiply the 1/7 answers by 7, and the 1/30 answers by 30

Revaley

@alternative_be like, if in a single day you encountered 1 person who says they're only there once a month, you could maybe say you would have encountered 31 such people if you had kept the poll open all month

@skobkin It only partly makes sense, I am aware of that. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to carry out a poll that lasts longer than 7 days. I felt that less and less people came on here, so I wanted to know how often people are checking #Mastodon. I want to keep posting here, because other social media drive me crazy.

Alexey Skobkin

@alternative_be Some people always be gone after some time.
Try to find new people to follow, it's only natural.

Tak

@alternative_be @skobkin activity of ppl I follow seems pretty stable nowdays, though it was momentarily higher around the peak twitter ownership drama time.

Jona Joachim

@alternative_be @skobkin I use the Twidere app on Android which supports concurrent Twitter and Mastodon accounts so I don't have to choose

Jasper

@skobkin @alternative_be actually selection bias screws with pretty much all the polls here. It's all vague indications at best..

@jasper @skobkin @alternative_be

polls will always be skewed by the group of people who are mutual folowers but that would be the same or worse on corporate social media due to algorithms..

there are also interesting differences when polls are posted in languages other than English - a recent poll showed the age range of German speaking users is older than compared to other similar polls I've seen in English (more Gen X and even a few Boomers)

Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK

@jasper @skobkin @alternative_be

what *is* however notable is the much larger response to any polls compared to just a year ago; they regularly get hundreds or more responses whereas previous it would maybe be a few tens..

Switch

@alternative_be I unfortunately forget to come and see what's up. I just downloaded a client on my phone though, so I might be coming more often now.

Wydamn

@alternative_be I don't post every day, but I usually lurk at least a few times a day.

isΠ° :luna: :jules:

@alternative_be @kunsi every day is a bit low. Better ask how many times a day

Matrix-Sasuke :ablobcool:
@alternative_be 1/4th of people who log in monthly don't get a chance to reply
Stefan

@alternative_be I deliberately make sure not to check #Fediverse too often, so only by means of the #App called #Tusky for #Android and only from the #Smartphone. πŸ˜‰

patter

@alternative_be well, I don't post often, but I check most days

Adnan (Skinshafi)

@alternative_be Inconsistently... sometimes I'm in all day every day and other times I might peek in once a day, a week or even in months.

Karen E. Lund πŸ’™πŸ’›

@alternative_be It's pretty much every day now, even if it's just ten or fifteen minutes to scroll through this and/or my other #Mastodon account. (There's also a Pixey account I need to visit more.) I've definitely increased my #Fediverse time in the past year.

Martin Vogel

@alternative_be Shouldn’t the poll run for a month at least?

alternative_beβœ…πŸ––πŸ»

@mardor Unfortunately that’s not possible. See the answers to the posts above.

Alexandra Soroca 🎹

@alternative_be Masto is probably the only non-local social media that is still not blocked in Russia, so I guess I have no choice. πŸ˜† Don't post every day (because most times I have nothing to say), but I read timelines and comment on interesting stuff.

alternative_beβœ…πŸ––πŸ»

@SeventhMagpie Thank you so much for your feedback. Much appreciated!

DL5PSY

@alternative_be That is a fun, but not well designed poll. If you ask if people are only online once a month, but then poll is only tunning 7 days, you inevitably will miss them :D

alternative_beβœ…πŸ––πŸ»

@dl5psy I know, but 7 days is the maximum that #Mastodon allows us to run a poll. Secondly, as I remember from my sociology/ statistics classes 35 years ago, any viable poll should have 5 options. @Gargron ?

Ar[N]aud

@alternative_be

Everyday on #Mastodon though that doesn’t mean i post everytime.
On #Pixelfed it’s quite rare because i barely go out or do anything, work aside.
As for #Bookwyrm my account is too recent to be relevant but i think i’ll be on it each time i start or finish a book.

@alternative_be
Would be curious to record the votes over time and then watch how the distribution progresses during the week. πŸ€”

alternative_beβœ…πŸ––πŸ»

@jdoe Indeed. I didn’t really track, but I definitely noticed a shift.

Rathmox

@alternative_be I have an account but honestly never use it because everything I do is on centralized services
