@elduvelle @Mikaleb @pixelfed that's true but everybody wants something for free. As long as ads aren't using mined meta data I find them a tolerable alternative to subscriptions.

@acs Maybe, but again, nobody here wants ads. The clearest advantage of this place over all the for-profit ones is that it has no ads and I hope it stays like that for ever.

Also, it's not that we need ads, there are other ways to support our instances, like donations, contributing some time, funding by grants or other no-strings-attached sources.

The attention-sucking, consumerist, privacy-invading ad system that people are getting so used to is not the only way to go!

@elduvelle @acs @Mikaleb @pixelfed Agreed. I'm willing to pay to have ads stay the hell away from me

So you won’t kick in say $5 to keep the place free from the fast track to fascistic influence?

Advertising is built on the same foundation as propaganda. And the propagandists have been exploiting that infra for decades.

Mikaleb

@Aphrodite @acs @elduvelle @pixelfed making the platform non free is a tad antidémocratic don't you think?

I support my admins.

I chip in €20 every few months to help with ops and upkeep.

Not everyone does.

Not everyone is expected to.

That’s democratic.

If next week I were to kick in €10k, I would be doing so only to help those who can’t contribute to the care and feeding of my instance. That’s democratic.

If I kicked in €10k so that my voice would be amplified and so that I could control what others see, that’s authoritarian.

Mikaleb

@Aphrodite @acs @elduvelle @pixelfed but if you exclude de facto people who can't pay, you eliminate their voice. That's why my original take was that if participating is not enough, random ads can be good enough, solving the funding problem and the targeted ads

El Duvelle

@Mikaleb Nobody said those who can't pay are excluded... You pay if you can

Thank you. I appreciate you stepping up. I try to be consistent with Mother Jones and Wikipedia. All of this commotion highlights my means and the choices I have to make everyday. Vulture capitalists' have so much privilege they waste it on renaming landmarks and idle threats confused with NOT-so-idle-threats. The cost of doing business.

I feel like chump change for their coffers.

So thanks. This platform matters to me.

Where did I say that anyone was excluded?

Don’t put words in my mouth. And don’t read words that aren’t there.

@Mikaleb @Aphrodite @acs @elduvelle @pixelfed I can't pay at the moment and nobody makes me feel excluded. I'll pay when I can.

I don't think it's possible to serve an ad in 2025 that DOESN't mine metadata. Maybe I'm wrong.

Adrian

@bbonkers @elduvelle @Mikaleb @pixelfed perhaps not automatically. However if I tell you about my hypothetical new bike and all is great features is would probably appear to be advertising but I wouldn't be mining you. Similarly if an instance took commercial sponsorship and publicly stated that they had done so.
