Would there be an advantage or protection if you registered it (or part of it) as a non-prof? Just wondering, I don't know.

Non-profit would not matter, except for issues of taxation. Instead, many organizations place restrictions within the Charter or Articles of Incorporation or Articles of Association or Article of Organization. These restrictions prohibit certain behaviors and activities. Also, many organization prohibit the sale of the organization and its assets to another organization that does not have the same restrictions. That way the board can't sell off the assets to avoid the restrictions.
