The Material You redesign of our Android app came out quite early in the year but it's another highlight. I maintain that it must be one of the most beautiful apps on Android. The design is so clean. And the whole app is just 5MB. It makes me wish I had an Android phone. @samhenrigold and @grishka really hit it out of the park.

@Gargron You're the only one who has'nt an Android.

@Gargron @samhenrigold @grishka Too bad you violated Material You guidelines on accessibility, and still apparently haven't fixed it. But clean designs are clearly more important than accessible applications.

@Gargron @samhenrigold @grishka Having the Mastodon app respect my system design and theme is AMAZING and actually plays a significant role in me wanting to be on the platform.

Genuinely awesome stuff. Thank you guys!!!

@Gargron I just posted that I've been rotating between Android Masto apps (Official, Tusky, Fedilab) and the official app is the slickest. It looks the cleanest, and most importantly, its scrolling is SUPER solid. No hitching or anything like that, which I really appreciate as a user. #Fediverse #Mastodon

@Gargron I really appreciate the app being very lightweight. I'm no dev but, I notice many apps inflate in size by simply updating to the next design language for no reason

mesa keith :damnified:, it's because most Android apps use Google libraries. Google really acts like those bloated libraries that provide useless indirection are the only way to build M3 UIs. I had to go out of my way to keep things sane. I had to reimplement some components from scratch because the only "official" implementation that exists depends on the Google way of doing things so much it's really easier to do what I did than to try to decouple them. And, let's just say that my approach is very controversial among the Android developer community. But users are happy, and that's what actually matters in the end.

@grishka @Gargron Thank you so much for making things invisibly better for the rest of us ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ

@grishka @mk_rexx @Gargron just looked at the list of your projects on your website. Impressive, much respect to you for saving us (non devs) from Google.

With the understanding that some people will and do call it a waste of time, another highlight of my year was getting the #Plushtodon out into the world. I didn't want to just make another soulless piece of merch to tick off a box. I wanted to create a toy, a friend, that would rival anything you could get at a toy store. It brings me joy seeing that people seem to appreciate the effort.

Viviana

@Gargron
Thank you for doing that. #Plushtodon is really really cute!

@Gargron

People really seem to like them. I plan to order one myself at some point.

It is kind of a little thing, but it does seem to bring people joy.

@Gargron
I love it!
It was a lovely thing to bring into the world.

@Gargron I'm happy for the community and you. Your toy is very lovely. Can't wait for mousepads or other merch with that theme. I'd buy a mousepad with Plush on it today.

On the business side, not taking away from your joy or accomplishment, I appreciate you using the #Plushtodon hashtag so I can filter the ad from my home to my special ad list that is hidden from home, but I wish you would set an example and include the #Advert or #ad tag when pushing merch.

If a universal ad tag was used, then we wouldn't have to create a filter for each new recurring item or seller tag

It would set a good example that it is ok to push some fundraising and even sales, if done responsibly, and respect users' choice to filter ads to a hidden list or from their home timeline completely as hidden with or without warning.

@Gargron I love Plushtodon! I also hope you do another run of then because I didn't get one on time before it sold out. ;)

@Gargron

Love my Plushtodon! Even as adults, we still need fun, silly things that make us smile, and my little pachyderm does exactly that.

@Gargron Thank you for #Plushtodon, I love it and I really appreciate your help in getting it delivered to me after DHL claimed twice that my home doesn't exists :)

@Gargron Is someone dissing #Plushtodon‽ We ride at dawn! 🥊

Seriously, this has to be one of my favorite items from #Mastodon!

However, what we need is more plushie’s from the #Fediverse, not less!

@Gargron my highlight is definitely the plush. Whatever happens to Mastodon, eons from now a physical, friend-shaped version remains!

Ric

@Gargron it's enormous and people spotting it in other people's homes will ask what it is. So it's an excellent piece of marketing which people want to have, and that puts money in the funds pot instead of taking from it. Who the hell could possibly think any of that is a waste of time? 🤨

ëRiC

@Gargron I can totally understand that sentiment! Whenever I'm making a logo for something I always aim for t-shirtability 😃

@Gargron Will there be one at #FOSDEM this time that I can squeeze for evaluation purposes? @andypiper

@Gargron @samhenrigold @grishka Wow, that is really impressive! I just now noticed that it takes up so little space. This is truly an achievement.
